I saw a post awhile back about someone asking what's a good oil to use for their steam engines, I can't remember who to thank for this blend recipe that was posted up some years ago....but since making it up its all I use and its brilliant -

Interesting…. Well I always say oil is oil, except for when water is present, or heat tolerances… but in a “pinch” you could certainly get away with using straight vegetable or canola oil on parts that don’t touch steam or water!
