I'm happy that you are considering the Teflon tape solution.
I suggest you try the packing gland first - it ought to be
the easiest possible solution and does not involve altering any
parts (like cutting ring grooves in the piston - last resort).
A little tricky because it has to be tight enough but not too
tight. I hope you can try it without having to disassemble
many parts.

I love these big German twins and yours sounds and looks great.
It is too bad that it is too worn to run on steam.
I've had a couple of engines like that, in particular an Elektro.
Bad design and pot-metal engine/cylinder. I removed both the slide
valve and piston, filed grooves for a ring in each, and used twisted
Teflon tape for the rings. Works well so far and I'm working on
another. If it is easy to remove the pistons you might try this
tactic.
My Empire Playboy engine has a 'sloppy' motor that will not run until
I liberally coat the cylinder and piston with steam oil. It works well
after a bit of coaxing and makes me feel like the 'boss'! You could
try this angle. Certainly, easiest method to try
On the other hand, you have a nice working engine that sounds great.
Some would say "Why mess with success!". You only have to please
yourself.

A few months back I determined the issue was at the connecting rod to the piston, at the gland packing. There was none, I tried a few different things but it didn’t work. Didn’t try the teflon tape, but that stuff seems to work very well. I ought to try this on the piston and the gland, and see if it works. I need to get a better nipple for the steam inlet, but the threads are very small and unique.

I rebuilt this one from parts that were gifted to me by Scott Rouze's widow.
I gifted it to Travis.
The base had previously been repainted (and the paint job was poor).
Travis did a nice job tuning it up.
I often think of Scott Charlie.

Here I am demonstrating the Doll 365/1 engine I repainted black a number of months ago being powered by the Jensen 50. I’ve tried to run it off steam and sadly it’s too much blow-by. It surely runs cool attached to Jensen 50 which provides plenty of power! I like the sound this guy provides.
