Here in Vancouver in 2010 we heard about the politics and finances involved for months, but to have actually been downtown during the Olympics was truly an experience of a lifetime, and even better if you scored some red mittens. :)

I fully agree with you, I don't like this political and commercial recovery either.
That said, this is something one could see once in his life so I have been happy to be there, it was so easy.
What is shown on TV is very filtered and... quite small ;D

Ah, Raphael, I am glad that you found joy in getting to see this.
Thank you for showing this as it is likely something I will never see in person myself.
I must say, however, that I find the crass commercialization of the spectacle to be rather disenchanting, distracting from the supposedly pure ideals of the International Olympic gathering and the dedicated efforts of the athletes that are the true Olympians of our age!
It seems that it should go without saying, but along with the commercialization, there is also the associated politics that perhaps does even more to rob the Olympics of their higher ideals!
Or perhaps it is just me that feels this way?!?!

Bonjour,
Before the games themselves, the Olympic flame travels to numerous locations in France and overseas. I was lucky enough to see her pass, a fleeting moment, in the neighboring town where I live and I was far from being the only one despite the gloomy weather.
