Nice work Gil! And nice water tower as well.
Thanks, Brent!

Yes, that is a great water tower, thank you very much!

At some point after I get the engine completely finished, I would like to make a longer run utilizing the water tower.

Update...

Here are 2 photos of the Stuart fittings original to this boiler. I fitted the glass tube and tested with air pressure and water. No leaks!

The new pump wasn't holding water in the boiler so I opened it to access the check balls and gave them a tap to better seat them. Also added a spring to keep the exit check ball more firmly seated. I will need to inspect the spring after a few runs. I think it is steel and will deteriorate quickly. )OK for testing but wants to be brass)

I have also pressed in a new crosshead pin as the original was well worn.

You did a fantastic job.  Jaw is on the floor.

A minor project delay.

It appears I need to move the firebox and chimney stand about 3/16" further away from the engine.

I drilled the screw holes larger and pressed wood dowels into the holes.

Now I can re-drill them all in the better location.

Now to fit it to the wood.

I made a #50 paper template for drilling holes in the wood about 10 years ago. It was quite helpful.

Note that the flywheel has the early 1930s dark blue paint. I have left that original along with the early 1930s generator that is also dark blue.

Engine assembly time.

The water pump is not precisely correct for this early example.
However it is a genuine Jensen water pump made by Tom Jr. about 15 years ago.

Here is the cast iron engine base repainted.

I used a semi-gloss urethane.

I went to our local Sherwin Williams store.
I brought a mid 1930s Jensen with me for color matching and I explained I've had trouble before with computers reading colors wrong. Some have come close but I have never been terribly pleased with computer color sampling.  The woman running this store has a very good eye and knows here products well. She brought me directly to a wall of color sample cards and quickly picked out 3 cards all similar. I think this one nailed it. She said she could mix it in a semi-gloss urethane and that was her recommendation.

Gil

Here it is resting on the original 1930s base I had copied.

And on a small table..

That is a heck of a project you have there.

It would be nice to get a back-story on this engine such as where
you found it and how long ago, to start.  Was it stored in a barn?
Was the owner a 'character'?  All cool!

Hopefully, Jensen will be able to supply any parts you
may need.  They are also good with advice and help when needed.
For me, they fixed an unfixable engine.

Keep us posted,
Wayne
I wish I knew more about it's life before me.

I have had it more than 17 years as these pictures were taken in Westport before we moved to Easton in April 2007.
Clearly an incorrect water pump is on it. I was able to get Tom Jr. to make me a new water pump. This was over 15 years ago.

The rest of the parts, I have had to source outside of Jensen. Doug supplied an early correct generator with a cracked magnet that still works.

Note that Tom Jensen Sr. used Stuart Turner site glass parts on this early example.

Can't wait to see how this one progresses! I agree, how could this high end Steam Engine get so brutalized!

Basement flooding would be my best guess, while inside a cardboard box.

It simply boggles the mind, that anyone who could be lucky enough to actually own a Jensen 50, would let such deterioration and neglect occur and progress to such a shocking level.

They might as well have taken an older, classic Rolls Royce, to a destruction derby.

WOW, that sucker looks truly rugged!

Still, it has found the right place to be brought back to life, and I for one am delighted that I get a ringside seat on that resuscitation!!

I can already "see" the wonderful machine that it is destined, once again, to be!!!

A number of years back (not certain how many years) I acquired the nastiest looking Jensen 50 I had ever seen.

It has been on the back burner for a long time.

In this thread I will add updates as progress is made.
