Title: Re: Jensen #50 Help!
Post by: Steamburns on September 29, 2024, 09:35:00 pm
@Steamburns did you get the 50 steaming again?
Great question, Nick!

Travis, I'm not sure why you are asking about a sheath.
Are you referring to the outer casing on the heater?
If so, it is a non replaceable part of the heater.

New heater for the center is what you will need. Jensen should be able to sell you one.
The new one from Jensen will likely be 660 watts so it will build a head of steam a little faster.

Once warmed up, you should be able to unplug both outside heaters and the new single 660 in the center will do nicely by itself.

To begin, put penetrating oil on the outside (daily for 3 to 7 days) and let it soak for a while.
I once had to soak the threads for nearly a week. You do not want to bugger up the outside of the heater to the point you can't turn it.

Gil, the outer casing yes.  There’s a metal “layer” over the electrical heater itself, that slides in first, I assume, then a ceramic heater slides inside that?

I haven’t messed with it yet, but it still steams up. Leaving that center heater off.

Yeah it steams. I haven’t been online a whole lot until recently.  I haven’t messed with the center heater, too nervous to do so.   But I have the center heater unplugged and running the 2 outers, in the meantime.

The Jensen 50 is a beast and I hope to have one someday - I'll likely
have to sell my other Jensens to pay for it.

I've had good luck with advice and help from the kind folks at Jensen and
they resoldered a #10 engine 'separated' cylinder/valve-chest for a very
reasonable price - Andy is the miracle worker.  I added a video of the
repaired engine running.  Later on, I switched the boiler for a complete
one.

P.S. - please add a photo or two from the other end of the boiler.

Good Luck,
Wayne

1. Replace the center immersion heater.

2. Replace all the site glass window gaskets (unless they are already teflon and undamaged)

3. Get CLR or white vinegar and clean the glass and the inside of the boiler.

4 Use ONLY distilled water.

Where do I get the center immersion heater, and where do I get the metal sheath that fits this style #50?  The Jensen website parts site doesn’t have #50 parts.  I suppose I could call em’.

Today I went to fire up the #50 and it was leaking so much steam from the top gasket it wasn’t able to sustain pressure.  Removed all the sight glasses and wing nuts and took a peak inside the boiler.  To my demise / surprise I found the center immersion rod to be bent near the end and also cracked and corroded.  I’d only guess at some point in its life someone let it run dry and the center rod bent and cracked, perhaps?  I attached photos for you to review.  There are Jensen wizards on here.

My question is how has it not been leaking water out the rear if the center rod is cracked?

Where can I get a new immersion rod to fit this and a new sheath for the center one?

This #50 will be out of service until repaired.  Also need new gaskets, which I will either order from Jensen or get from Charlie. He has a ton.
