I'd leave it in as well, as it seems a good reinforcing and stabilizing addition!

I would leave it in, quite flimsy without it and it was neatly done long ago

Thank you for the responses. I guessed it was an add on. I am not sure about removing it. The board is attached with Escutcheon Pins neatly done. I think taking them out will mess up the base, so for now it may just stay as it is.

I have an older similar model and it also does not have the wooden insert.

Mine does not have wood, and I have never seen wood on one. They are pretty flimsy so I’m sure it was added for strength. Well done! It’s a nice piece and one I hadn’t spotted ;)

I just got this off eBay. At first I did not think it was all original, but as I blew up the pictures it looked legit. It seemed to match the book on accessories I have. When I got it the trademark was on all the plane's. I was wondering if anyone had one and could check theirs to see if it had the wooden bottom. On mine it looks very crude, not even a circle. Almost looks like it was added to keep it down on a board.
