"Here is a Retrol Mill model engine running on propane. It was surprisingly easy to do and have found that propane has many advantages as a fuel. No more messy liquid oil gas mixtures to deal with, operates cooler with much less smell and no exhaust smoke and oil discharge. And it is quieter; so much so that I replaced to large muffler with a simple wood dowel that remains very clean at the exit.
I was worried about the lack of lubrication in the fuel, but just the opposite happened. Without the oil in the cylinder being diluted by fuel during miss-fires, the cylinder stayed well lubricated by the cyl oilier.
I found that propane fuel needs much less air to operate. The system uses a gas bag as its very low pressure “regulator”. It is partially filled before starting, the propane is shut off and then topped off as needed during running. The propane is fed into the unmodified carb’s fuel inlet, the needle valve is set at around 1/3 open, and the throttle control that others have used is almost totally closed off to air.
Yes, it still 8 cycles when slow running like all others that I have seen. But it is so nice to use and is quite different from running as a diesel that this remarkable Retrol Mill engine can also do."
