I like to use synthetic clock oil that comes in the needle oiler tubes or Mobil 1 synthetic 0W-20 or 0W-16. Both are light weight oils and hold a good film. And... they don't gum up.

In short:What is your position in regards of sewing maschine oil on axels, -and other moveable parts where not in contact with steam...?
I would believe sewingmaschine oil leaves little-to non residue/gue.
Sew machine oil is thin for sure. So using this would demand close attention.
Anyhow, I wil stick to the
Usual lub-oil.

For the most part I consider sewing machine oil to thin, unless built to really tight tolerances I don't think it has much staying power.
