Wayne is correct, Empires are very resilient and easily taken apart. Quite a few throttles I've had to "adjust" on my grinder to get it control the steam properly. Though like Wayne said, it likely just needs some cleaning from what you describe.
That all said, post photos and videos - don't be shy. I a bit of a sucker for Empires ;-)

The knob may be removed. Either the pointy end of
the screw or the seat it fits into is damaged or
coated with lime. In fact, the entire throttle
may be removed for cleaning. These engines were
made to be disassembled - but not the heating element.

Hello,
I have a new old stock Empire Model 43 which I steamed for the first time. Things went good at first but after five minutes or so I could no longer fully stop the engine. I turned the throttle knob fully but it only slowed down. It never stopped, which it had done just a minute or two before.
I suspect the throttle is a cone shaped screw threading into a cone shaped "nut" but I am a novice steam hobbyist. Is it safe to unscrew the throttle fully and remove the knob & needle or would that hurt something? As this engine is pristine I don't want to take chances.
