Hi Jan I have been out of the loop for a while and just seen this and your PM I will take pics of my two like this today and send them to you .
Lovely engine by the way
Regards Andrew

All right you guys .... now I'm going to have to go and dig a few of my #20's out to see what I have in this regard, though I'm pretty sure I don't have any of these special features, for I'm certain that if I had, I'd have noticed, and noted them on my file cards.
-
I guess they had never seen it before. So they just thought it was modified at some point. Plus I have been known to change and modify things a little bit myself. Like the 20R I built. ::)
-
My pleasure Jan, glad to be of help. To be honest I had not noticed the rivet and screw mix until it was pointed out on here.
I had noticed the older black box #20's use the single screw and plate on their "open" valve chest.
-
I have so been looking forward to see these, fantastic looking examples the both of them.
So cool that you have both known versions (screws/rivets and screws only)...so far.
Had you noticed the difference yourself, until this came up?
Well done, and thanks for sharing Steven !
...and Randy, why on earth would they postulate that?
-
Thanks. Now I can prove the one that I've got isn't modified. I've had couple people telling me it had been modified and wasn't factory built that way.
-
As requested, I have finally got around to posting some photo's of the two #20's I have that are fitted with the stuffing box type valve.
First up is a power plant that is of 1986 vintage. You will notice that this one is fitted with two screws, and two rivets in the side of the valve chest, and the "O" ring gland in the valve stem.
[attachimg=1][attachimg=2][attachimg=3]
The second #20 is also a power plant, and is of 1985 vintage. This engine was once a resident of the Temple of Steam.
You will notice that this engine is fitted with four screws in the side of the valve chest, and has the same "O" ring gland in the valve stem as the previous engine.

I am sure this will all add to the mytery of the Jensen #20 steam chest design.

I figured there was more of them out there. I just haven't seen or know of any. This is getting interesting.
-
Hmmm...
This is getting interesting. ???
Agreed, seems more of them are coming out of the woodwork.

Very nice

Steven has replied to me via PM, and will share some detail pics of his at some point.
He has two of these, one with cast iron and one with the early teal painted stamped aluminum generator, will be fun to see if they´re different to ours here
Fingers crossed Andrew will do the same, once i get hold of him, as he (appearently) has two as well.
-
Interesting that there are more variations Randy, will have to take a look at my 20's this afternoon...
Well... no luck with finding this feature on the 20's on the shelf here
-
Trying to figure out what Jensen done is part of the fun of collecting them. Just when you think you got it figured out you find something different. I have only seen 2 with the stuffing box , cap, and 4 screws in the side of steam chest. I'm sure there is probably more out there. Kinda strange that both are 20s with generators hooked to them. Wonder if he was trying to seal them up better to get more power from them to pull generator better.

Thanks Kevin (https://emoji.tapatalk-cdn.com/emoji482.png)

A beautiful steam plant Jan, it’s great to hear fellow steamers helping each other out.
-
Very nice Randy, thanks for sharing !
Regarding age i was pretty close then, since the cast iron base genny, according to much more knowledgeable people than i, was decommisioned in 1979.
Will have to ask Steven "Griffin" and Andrew "Scalex for details of theirs, to see if more variations is out there.

-
More pics.
-
Sorry didn't add pictures ::)
-
I have one that is the same way. Has the stuffing box, 4 screws in side of steam chest and slide valve hole is plugged. My engine has castiron base generator on it.
-
Ah, there it's back and well worth watching 8)
-
Thanks guys !
@Nick Yes, i somehow managed to make it "private", should be ok now? (https://emoji.tapatalk-cdn.com/emoji28.png)

I was definitely interested in this one when it appeared on eBay, and had I known what you knew about the steam chest, it may have cost one of us quite a bit more ;) :D
By the way, have you removed the video?
-
What an interesting find you have acquired there Jan. All totally new to me mate.
I can see why your so happy to add that to your collection, looking forward to seeing what the old elbow grease does to this delightful piece of Jensen history.
-
You and me both Larry!!!
-
Good looking steam plant Jan with an interesting twist - I guess I've got to pay more attention and learn more about Jensens.
-
Thank you Scott !!!
You´ve made at least one person very happy today (https://emoji.tapatalk-cdn.com/emoji482.png)
-
Yea, it made it!
Great engine, that one.
Enjoy it, Jan. It has certainly found a good home.
-
Thanks guys, happy as a clam here
Yes Philip, it is a factory production, but i assume these were an experimental batch(es), rather than dedicated "specials".
However, that´s all gueswork on my behalf, and would be very happy to be educated... GIL, need you here !!!
I naturally couldn´t resist testing it on steam, now that it was out of the box, and besides being a bit "dry", it performed very nicely.

Nice haul Jan!
The valve stuffing box is also a new one on me, i take it was a factory special?
-
This is all news to me. I've seen the blue anodized #15 bases before, but the valve spindle stuffing box is a new one on me.
Cool find and great Forum assist on the deal. Delighted to learn about this!!!
-
I don't guess I even knew of such a thing Jan, I've seen the "0"ring on the inside of the slide valve ...but never noticed the rest before , there is alot of extra work in that one.
Nice catch & assist from Scott.
looking forward to the video.

Just collected an engine at the local postoffice, that have lived on the wishlist for quite a few years now.
Scott orchestrated initial purchase and reshipping, and for that i am eternally grateful. Thank you my friend, MUCH appreciated !!!
I just ripped it out of the box, and shot these pics as is, but am certain that some simple cleaning, will bring this one back to as new condition.
Datewise it´s an early 80´s Jensen 20 as far as i can tell, and the "special" part about it, would be the blue anodized generator, combined with a #20 engine sporting a "valve stem stuffing box".
[attachimg=5]
Comparison pics of the engine itself:
The rear end of the piston valve bore is plugged.
[attachimg=2]
The "stuffing box" and 2 rivets/2 screws in side of steamchest.
[attachimg=3]
Standard #20 engine, with no "stuffing box" (please take my word for that), 3 rivets in the steamchest, and open piston valve bore:
