Welcome to the hobby! I've been involved for about 10 months and have been trying to learn all I can.
The internet is a great source of information, and it's free. This site should give you a good rundown on many manufacturers and a good cross-section of their models:

Here are some additional sites I've found informative:

http://www.ventix-pages.de/doll/D-Dampf/D-Alle_mit_Bild/d-alle_mit_bild.html
There are also a wealth of information on YouTube. Two of my favorites -- search for "St. Paul Steam" and for "Keith Appleton".
Again, welcome to the hobby!

Can anyone recommend any model steam books? as I'm new to this hobby I'd like to have a good read about differnet manufactures and models.
I have the "how to build" books and i also have one called Toy Steam engines by Bob Gordon which I like but I'd like a lot more, any suggestions?
