Title: Re: Retrol EngineDIYshop SE-03 Small Modification
Post by: Jim on January 21, 2026, 03:48:51 pm
I wondered about the burner removal - the clearance at the bottom of the
boiler and base looked tight.
Turns out I was right - there is interference.
Hmmm.
Nice job turning the spacers on your lathe for a fix.

One question.  Were there any adjustments needed in the pipe connections
as everything was raised 3mm or about 1/8"?

As always, nice video presentation,
Wayne

G'day Wayne
The way they have constructed the SE-03 compared to the SE-02 is very clever.
There is a sliding brass housing that goes over some high temp silicone tubing to cover it, on the SE-02 you can't hide this tubing.
So, when you put the spacers on to raise the boiler height, there's enough of the silicone tubing to accommodate the rise and the brass housing covers the rise.

If you don't have access to a lathe, you could use some small brass washers. You need to raise the boiler plate by 3mm and this will still allow the screws to go into
the tapped and threaded holes of the base (another upgrade over the SE-03).

It's made it so much easier for me now to be able to remove and replace the burner tray. The hand sanitizer for me is THE fuel for the SE-03, a full burner tray brings the boiler up to boil and I get a good 20 minute run with the light on and the pressure gauge not dropping down and I can put my finger on the flywheel and see the governor go into action.

You are really going to enjoy the SE-03.

This is a small modification that I have made to the SE-03 because I'm dropping the firebox out on a regular base's because I'm mostly using hand sanitizer gel with 75% ethanol as it's worked out for me as just the perfect fuel for this steam plant with plenty of steam pressure and good powerful runs for around 20 minutes. A simple mod turning down some brass and parting it off so that the risers were 3mm gave the perfect clearance to the boiler base of the plant and now the firebox is a quick and easy removal.
