I don't know about the Sieg machines, but I have a Grizzly G0704 mill of a similar style Z axis handle, and it has bevel gears. Seems to work fairly well with a reasonable minimum of lash.

Bevels, yes, I think so, too. With some applied attention I could make a conversion, but it is my hope to keep the little machine all OEM.
Sieg told me to contact dealers for details and dealers have said to contact Sieg. :-\

If it is anything like the bigger mills from same factory then the side wheel at top 0f column is probally utilising bevel gears

The two mini-mills below are the SX1P made by Sieg in China. The red one is from a supplier in Australia, the grey from a German supplier. Both machines stand out because they have the z-axis hand-wheel mounted on the side of the column instead of on top like the standard SX1P. It has been confirmed that the side-wheel is a Sieg factory upgrade.
I've been trying to get a closer look at the wheel mechanism but much net surfing has not found any photos. The owner's manuals I've seen for these modified machines do not show the side-wheel mechanism in the assembly drawing or parts list. Sieg and the two vendors have not offered any information.
So, I'm reaching out hoping someone has this mill and can help.
