Iron and steel don't melt quite as easily as solder does .... you probably already knew this, but now you have proof positive!!!    ;c)

Was at the end of the spool and the last length about 6" long came off, laid it on the bench and grabbed the torch to solder a pipe joint.
Thought I had everything heated up pretty good but the solder would not melt, in desperation put the flame on the solder wire and it soon turned red hot.
I was at about that time I realized I had picked up a length of wire off the bench not the solder. :)
