Title: North American Model Engineering Show 2019
Post by: txlabman on March 05, 2019, 03:19:21 pm
The N.A.M.E.S. show is taking place April 27-28, 2019 at the Yack Arena in Wyandotte, Michigan, USA.

www.namesexposition.com

This is the second best show in the USA for all things steam (IMHO Cabin Fever is Numero Uno).

I know that Gil and I will be attending.  Gil will be exhibiting.  I am flying in for the show and will not be exhibiting as a result.

Please post in this thread if you are planning on attending.

Jeez guys....do you know how lucky you all are :)

Thanks Nick :)

Was a long trip for us!

I found my trip report, was fun to read again...

We dropped the kids off at their grandma's in the morning and made it home around noon so we could head out on the long trip and enjoy ourselves. About 12:30 we had the van loaded up with a bed in the back

Probably wasn't the best time to head out as we made it into Chicago right at 5-6pm and were only moving about 5 to 10 mph for many miles... We decided to pull of the road and get some supper to let the traffic die down a little. Afterwards, as we started back on our trip, my wife realized how close we were to the "Shameless House" so we had to take a half hour detour to see that at about 8:45 pm...

I've never seen the show and don't know what the big deal was, but she seemed pretty excited about it

We continued on the long journey and made it into Michigan about 11:15 pm. The only problem is Wyandotte is on the other side of Michigan, so the trip continues...

About 2:30am we pulled into Wal-Mart, 3 miles from Yack Arena. 9am came pretty fast and we headed on over to the show. I really cannot describe how awesome walking into a show like this is... where to start, what to look at, just so much to see!! I found Gil and Charlie pretty fast, they were near the entrance and Charlie texted Bruce and had him meet up over there as well so I finally got to meet Gil after 10+ yrs, Bruce after 7 yrs and Charlie after nearly a year 😀 I was lucky enough to get an old speed indicator from Charlie, a custom threaded Jensen funnel from Bruce and Gil brought me my Jensen 50 balls in a little sack 😄

We must have walked completely through the show 4 or 5 times and stopped by Brent's table as well. I never did run into Bruce again, he must have snuck out early, but we were invited out to eat with Charlie, Gil, Simone and another guy that was displaying by Gil (can't remember his name). Thank you again Charlie for supper!! Not sure when we left, but it must have been sometime around 7pm. We were gonna stop halfway and sleep, but I ended up driving straight home and we pulled back into our driveway at 4:40 am. Was a lot of driving! 1,302 miles and the show in just over a day and a half, but definitely worth it and I will do it again!!

Charlie got a picture of Angie, Bruce, my wife and myself

And Charlie asked if I was a coffee drinker... Nope, Red Bull got me there and back  ;D

Ang & I will be attending & look forward to a large meet up of forum members. Doug ,if you make it the "Henry Ford" Museum and Greenfield Village you will absolutely love it, you might want to check into hotel and Museum package deals as they can save you a lot of money, most hotels/motels in that vicinity offer a package deal.

Charlie, i have to disagree with your #1 and 2 ratings! Coolspring has to be in there somewhere-I would put it at #1 if you like to show, buy, and sell for 5 days. Of course i might be prejudice since i only live 20 minutes from it and can go every night! Of course, I have never been to NAMES, so may ahve to re-evaluate in a few weeks!

Fair enough Doug.  I thought of Coolsprings as more full size and hit and miss engines rather than toy steam and engineered models.  But, I haven't been to Coolsprings.  I hope to rectify that in 2020.

My wifes camera broke right before we left for the show, so no videos here. I did take some pictures of steam engines at the Henry Ford museum with my phone which i will upload, but it was great meeting up with old forum friends and a few new ones as well! Nick, it was great meeting you and knowing we have some younger blood interested in keeping this hobby going- lots of us old guys involved in this hobby, but not so many young people.
I loved the show being a first timer, although miss being able to buy and sell much with no auction or consignment sale. I did manage to meet up with Nick Rowland and purchase 3 of his wonderful engine ignition units, by far the best on the market (IMHO) and a reasonable price, which is why they have to be ordered in advance. My newly built Domestic vertical engine ran perfectly throughout the show, so i was very pleased. If something is going to break, it will always do it at a show in front of a large crowd of onlookers!

Haha Yes Doug, I may have looked a little out of lace at the show  ;)  But I am doing my best to try and bring more into the hobby, including 3 sons of my own!

I managed to catch crazydoug and redryder in action at the show as well as their Domestic verticals
