Title: Microcosm M90- BBBBLOOOWN UP, SIR
Post by: Dr.Rev.DelmarMacReady on September 04, 2019, 12:51:02 pm
Well, not exactly. [attachimg=1][attachimg=2][attachimg=3]
Sadly, the first thing it did was blow the compression oring out. I have a few spots to touch up and buff in, but I'm overall pleased with the result.

Thanks, Bruce. I'd like to line it out, but as bad as my hands were shaking I decided to sleep on that. I was also contemplating a logo transfer of some sort on the tank...but for now it is a bit more to my liking. The longer lower base seemed to make it a bit more stable on the table as well- and I added rubber feet to help it stay in place. All in all, it is a fairly straightforward and easy engine to work on. No real special tools or anything needed. If somebody likes tinkering I'd say go for it.
I wondered if anyone has done an exhaust-maybe with a rain cap- on one of these? Would the longer pipe lead to to much backpressure for that tiny carb?

Nice!  I've been planning to do the exact same thing to mine, just haven't gotten around to it yet.  I thought it would look really good in red...

For mine, I'm also going to add a piston drip oiler and key the flywheels.

Good ideas. I'd thought of maybe also adding Oilers for the crank journals for kicks. I hadn't thought of keying flywheels, that is a top idea

Thank you, Larry. I needed something to do that was more or less stationary. Blew my dang back out moving ballast for the RR.

Many thanks, Roger. I mulled on olive drab for a moment, but the small size of these really begs for a bright color.

Looking great Benny! I have seen both a longer exhaust and with rain cap on youtube, will have to see if I can find them again...

So first off I've got to say - that title of this thread would make any Bill Murray fans smile.  Thanks for that!  I had my M90 torn down to like yours recently.  I wish I had thought to paint it like you did - beautiful job!  I'm thinking I'm going to have to tear it in down again and fix that oversight.

Nicely done sir!

Thanks, Nick...I think I found the one you were talking about. Seems to run fine. That might go on the list of mods too

Charlie, as they say around here, "If'n y'ant to".

Just pick the color. I settled on Guards Red only after trying every color I had.

Thanks for the kind words. I had a few boo-boos, but luckily they are hidden. You should hop right in and slap some paint on yours. All in all mine was only down Labor Day weekend. If I had replaced the o-rings when I put it back together, I wouldn't have to tear it back down...

Glad somebody caught the Murray reference! I was starting to worry that the whole forum was nothing but heathens. You should check out the documentary Bill Murray Stories.

Benny, your engine looks terrific.

Regarding an exhaust cap, if you are referring to those flapper lids on top of the stack, I recommend you dont do it. A hit & miss engine does not want a long exhaust pipe. The longer the pipe, the more it loses the ability to cool itself while free wheeling. A flapper cap will further exacerbate an already less than desirable arrangement by not letting cool air to travel back into the cylinder 20 to 30 times between firing. That's my 2 cents worth!

Again, it looks fantastic!

Gil

Thank you for that info, Gil. Cooling air was something I didn't consider. And many thanks for the feedback.

Was wondering about that pipe & flapper thing kind a figured it would cause issues. Thanks Gil, as always love your knowledge.

Thank you...I am lacking in fine finish skills like yours, and make do with simple rustic charm.
