Title: Plastic oscillator steam type engine (3D printer build)
Post by: St Paul Steam on September 04, 2019, 07:55:37 pm
My son brought this by yesterday as a gift , something he secretly did this on his 3D printer for me. & it does run, the piston is a rattle fit in the bore with a least 1/16" clearance (by computer design) but by golly I put her together by the instructions & it took right off, If I shimmed the axle & cut grooves in the piston rod for "0" rings, I think she would run quite a bit better...but I may just leave it just as is.
Oh I can see many neat things this 3D printer can do in the future.

Very cool Bruce!

I would love to buy a printer, but like computers they are out-dated right away and there is always a newer/better model...

An Aussie forum member has been using his to make patterns for castings

And there are also metal 3D printers  ;)

Amazing piece of work there and it DOES work!!!  Best part is that your son made it and gave it to you as a gift...bet you won't be selling that one!!!

Very cool Bruce.

I recall that Doug also built a working steam engine from 3D Printed Parts with his son.

Bruce:

I am curious whether it requires any lubrication?

My son printed out both the horizontal and vertical osc. I don't oil them at all, but i don't really run them a lot either. They are both fun to run and different from the norm, plus the added bonus of being something my son and i did together.

The instructions do you call for oiling.
