Title: Stuart 10-H Steam Engine from Ebay
Post by: crazydoug on February 13, 2020, 04:26:35 pm
This is a recent ebay purchase.  I've been watching for one at the right price for several years now.  Of course, this one looked good in the pictures. but that never really tells you what kind of machine work you'll find only after it arrives.  Luckily, this one had excellent machine work, with only a few minor things left to do to it.  It certainly had no frills in the way of accessories, but for $168, I can add oilers!

Today I decided to go out to the workshop and add the finishing touches to this little 10-H engine.  I drilled and added three oilers for the crankshaft and cross slide, and also drilled oil holes for the connecting rod and the cam for the valve rod.  I figured out how to adapt inlet and outlet lines to the 1/4-28 threads that the original builder used.

I decided I was satisfied with the exhaust port being on top and the inlet on the bottom, simply because I couldn't think of an easy way to correct that.  But a friend advised me to flip the cylinder 180 degrees.  I hadn't thought of that!  As long as the bolt patterns match up, that would correct the issue.

After seeing this engine on google images with the cylinder and ports in various arrangements, I finally looked on Stuart's website and flipping the cylinder 180 degrees end over end would allow mine to match up with their image.  Still, I think that I'm okay with it the way it is!  I also made two bolts so that all the bolts will match now, and I think that it's ready to put on the shelf.
