Title: Doll redo
Post by: Woe is me on February 27, 2020, 08:56:07 am
This is a Doll 364 I believe that I picked up off of Ebay. Wasn't very pretty at the time but it had potential.
This had been posted on another forum that I used to be on and just thought I'd revive one of my better turn outs.

A great transformation. The old girl looks ready for another 70-80 years. Excellent job.

Have you steamed it yet?

Yes I have Charlie, about two years ago was the last time. The first time I fired it up after the cleanup and paint job, the 25-30%
of the reddish paint on the bottom of stack turned black. Nothing else went bad.

Well done with the pinstriping. I have a Doll 504 roller which will need pinstriping some day (previous owners repainted it many moons ago:) I have been putting it off until I am confident of achieving a near factory look.

The striping really is impressive! What brush do you use, a Mack? or a liner? One Shot paint? I have tried this and failed miserably, now I cheat with a Bugler wheel, which only works on flat surfaces.

If only heatproof paint was easy to get in all colors.

Beautiful restoration. Did you try insulating the inside of the fire box to keep the paint from burning?

The paint job is off the hook.  Amazing pinstriping you give me motivation to start working on mine.

Enjoy your weekend!

Hi KNO3, sorry it's taken me so long to get back to your question.
No I didn't insulate the fire box, that's high temp paint. The
chimneys red brick color suffered from the heat. The lower 1/3 lost
the red color.

Hello Tommy,

You have done a fantastic job.
What shade did you take for the foundation? Is it midnight blue?

I'm sorry it took so long to reply. No, I painted the base, or foundation, black.
When I first received the engine, the finish on the base was so bad that it looked
like it was originally black but the paint was breaking down and losing pigment.
Several years after it was done, I realized my mistake and just left it.

Hello Tommy,
Thanks for the info. I am about to repaint my 368/2 and will use midnight blue as the base color.

Hello Jurgen, midnight blue should be right. Here's another Doll from that time frame.
I picked this up after the other one had been painted black

The pictures show me that I am on the right track.
Thanks a lot.
