I finished building an airplane ride from erector sets. I plugged the motor in, and to my surprise the cord caught fire (with a blue flame :o). I unplugged the cord. about 8 seconds later the top of the ride fell off.

Should have belted it up to an engine instead ;)
Any chance of a video? ;) Glad you're safe!

Well I have a photo of the motor.

Glad that you are still here to tell the tale.
The lead should have an earth pin and wire as the metal of the motor is exposed. Your safety switch or Rcd rccb or earth leakage device (not sure wht you call them over there) will not work without an earth.
If there was an earth your Safety switch would have tripped long before any flames.

Over here, it's a GFI (ground fault interruptor). Great for outdoor outlets, where things can get wet. Mandated for bathrooms and similar areas where I live.
