I'm always searching through antique shops, rarely finding any deals... But I do try to take pictures of what I leave behind, and thought I'd share them here as I come across them...
Keep in mind, a lot of these will likely include "Antique Shop Prices" $$$ :D
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7877/47380190971_b24ba9531e_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2fbPS5k)
If I remember right, the tractor was about $185 and log wagon $100-125
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7824/47380190911_2fd0c42a02_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2fbPS4i)
This one came home with me for about a day, and was shipped off to a forum friend in a trade. If you look closely, you'll notice a pump on the back side of the boiler
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7898/40414855663_a127f0a45c_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/24zjGyg)
Yes, that's $269 for a well used Jensen 76 :o

It's a stretch, but hobby-related...

I have to apologize for these pictures, my wife was not with me, so they were taken on my trusty flip phone :D
Weeden 43 at $169

Boxed Wilesco roller, not a terrible price at $125, but missing chimney and some minor paint bubbling from rust
(https://farm1.staticflickr.com/453/31369933394_b797671307_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/PN47hA)

This little Empire pump came home with me, it had nearly perfect paint and it was hard to pass up at $69

I was very excited when I spotted this little badge out of the corner of my eye
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7871/40415083073_deba345bde_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/24zkSa8)
Unfortunately it wasn't an engine :-\
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4903/40415083033_346b40a568_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/24zkS9r)

(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4900/40415083003_2cbe2564ab_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/24zkS8V)
I did find a Weeden in the same shop, but left it behind... priced at $160 and I was told I could take 20% off

I know many have a strong dislike for Esbit and other solid fuels, but I couldn't leave this behind either. Think it was somewhere around $20-25

(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7892/40415082853_bcaff1f962_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/24zkS6k)
They were sitting on display on top of an old dining room set because the shop owner didn't quite know what they were for. She thought they were hand warmers.
There was also a boxed/unfired SE2a (missing the burner) but I passed on it because they wanted $142.95

Here's an old find, my first cast base Jensen, 11 years and one week ago... 3/11/08
Probably paid a little too much, but that was before I became an "ebay addict" :D
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7809/46465479405_0db0efa7ba_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2dMZJcg)
The interesting part of this engine is that it has stayed in Minnesota since leaving the Jensen factory.
A label from Sears in Minneapolis, MN.(94 miles from me)
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7866/40415083133_80c2661013_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/24zkSba)
Then it traveled 111 miles to a Sears in Austin, MN. (38 miles from me)
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7809/40415082813_36645d2ee6_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/24zkS5D)
Then through several years, it ended up in an Antique shop in Rochester, MN (43 miles from Austin), where I purchased it

The Empire pump was the cherry pick Nick.

The Empire pump was the cherry pick Nick.
Thanks Jim, I've got a few more pictures from antique shops buried away somewhere... and I believe my only other shop purchase was an AHI workshop (battery or steam powered)
I hope to add more to this thread and welcome anyone else to post their antique shop finds here ;)
-
Its the same down here Nick "antique shops" think that they really have something with an old Wilesco or Mamod and ask outrageous prices, its always a thrill and gets the blood pumping when you find something to view though.
-
The most common find around here is the Weeden 14, yet I have failed to add one to the collection over the years :D
-

same here whenever I've found any toy steam related...they think they aren't made anymore & price accordingly.
You got a bargain on the Empire pump though Nick.
-
Good find! All I ever see is usually rubbish. Reminds me of a sign once that said, "We buy junk, but we sell antiques!".
-
Great thread & pictures . Keep`em comi`n.
I also think the Empire with pump was a great find.
No culture for model-engines on my part; and have never seen anything remotely associated with steamengines in antiques-shops on my part
-
Here's one of the nicest looking gray-based Wilesco engine/workshops that I've seen and would have loved to have added it to the collection, but they were very firm on their $299 price tag

Not the sears catalog but 1967 Montgomery wards

A couple of years ago I bought one of those Mamod log wagons at a big antique flea market for $10.00 Canadian! Never saw as good a deal before or since....
-

My sentiments exactly - have yet to buy anything at an antique store!
-
I stop at every antique shop I can find when traveling, even if it's for a quick minute to ask if they have any engines. They are nothing like they used to be... many are turning into "antique malls" and the owner of the item is rarely there, so they don't deal like they used to... I think most have turned into multi-dealer shops because a single dealer just can't make it anymore. And of course cash means nothing to them nowadays and you're almost always stuck paying sales tax.
The Empire with pump on the previous page had been in the shop for 3 years. The owner now lives in Missouri and I had the guy working at the shop call him to make the deal over the phone. They seemed kind of annoyed by me :D
-
A neat thread Nick. Thanks for putting it together.
I have only seen a few engines in antique stores. My wife and I go to estate sales a couple times a month, but nothing purchased so far.
Thanks for picking up the Empire for me. 🤠

Tell us if the pump works. :)

It works, but not very well.
I have cleaned and oiled it. Will require some more fettling.

Found this one a couple years ago on the way to Nebraska... an alcohol Jensen 75 with a good coating of black paint for $250
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7904/32454540517_5f6614fb03_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/RrU1cp)
and given recent ebay sales of Jensen 100's, this wasn't too badly priced at $125

Nice Jensen there.
The colour of it reminded me of a pretty sad-looking but rare Beggs locomotive that I found in an antique store a few years ago. When I bought it I didn't know what it was, and after I identified it I decided that it was too much for me to attempt to restore properly. The fellow who finally got it didn't see things that way, though; he seemed pretty excited about it.
-
AND from the same shop as the black Jensen, this Weeden at $360
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7836/32454540437_0be426af33_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/RrU1b2)
and a little Robert Fulton/Marvindustries (price long forgotten) looks like it might say $95

No photos from thrift shops like Nick does, but I did once score a nice boxed Wilesco D-5 from an antique store, once a year sale, for $15, but was told that the "big" steam engine had sold half an hour earlier. Of course they had no idea what the "big" steam engine might have been!?!?
Got a Mamod MM2 in nice complete condition at a yardsale once for $8.
Then there was the yardsale, just last year, where I picked up a good condition Jensen #100 workshop for $25, and was told they sold the steam engine that went with it for $40 just a little while before. Didn't really need the workshop, but it was too good a deal to pass up, so I took it. About a week later, I saw a want-ad in the local free advertiser asking for the workshop from that yardsale, by the person who bought that engine. Small town syndrome, it turned out that I knew the person, and made arrangements to meet up. Ended up instructing them, so they could teach their grandchild how to operate the steam engine (tin based Jensen #25), along with what else would be needed to run it, and where to get parts for it. Sold them the Jensen #100 workshop for just what I paid for it, and offered further help if they needed it!
Hope the kid really enjoyed it, as few kids get such gifts these days I'm afraid!!!
-
Nice finds Nick and love that Weeden ??? with the beam type engine
We don't get much steam stuff around here for sale in the Antique type shops

While up near Canada, I found a Jensen workshop. I thought it was $95, but the "1" on the tag was hidden behind the pulley...
I also called a dealer from that shop and he said he has a steam engine about one foot long coming up at an estate sale in May, but it's stored away and won't be available till then :-\

I found this riveted boiler #5 at a local antique shop which holds a flea mkt once a month. $150. They also have an "everything under $10 day- i spent $19 there once for 4 items that brought $550 resale. Nothing steam related though, but i have gotten many good deals from the special vendor/ flea mkt events they hold.

Great find Doug! Did you try to get them down on the price at all? or were you so happy to have found it that you paid full (cheap) price?

Actually, they were asking $250! They also had a Wilesco D5 for $250 as well, so they obviously didn't have a clue!

Early Jensen 5 and Wilesco D5, they're about the same engine, right?

Took a mini-vacation to Duluth, MN and found this "Working German Steam Engine" across the border in Superior, WI. It's still there if anyone wants it ;) :D

I asked her if she had any other steam engines and she said, "No, but I can come down on that one if you're interested"... I told her I already had that one as she would never come down enough!

This didn't come from an antique shop, but I did find it at a yard sale where a fellow was "cleaning out [his] father's junk."
It's a Cameron precision micro-drill press, and it's worth its weight in platinum.
https://cameronmicrodrillpress.com/
It's an older model (Model 164), but it still runs at up to 30000 RPM, and it came with a lot of goodies, so I grabbed it and ran. I cleaned it up a bit, bought the optional retrofit clear plastic guard for the pulleys (30000 RPM is scary!), and have pretty well the ultimate model engineering toy at a yard sale price.

Well, well, well....the injector pump EMPIRE
shows up again. Does ANYONE know how
it works?
On mine, the knob is connected to a shaft that
descends half-way down to the boss in the side of
the boiler. It does not go up or down (I did not
ham-fist it) which I think is how it should work.
It will twist around quite easily but that is not
the answer. A thin stiff rod will go up from the
bottom and meet at the boss, and maybe I could
give it a tap to see if it loosens the rod that I think
should go up and down....but I don't have the
nerve.
Thanks,
Wayne

I've seen many variations of the Empire stoves, they seem to be quite common around here (makes sense being made in WI). There's a completely different looking example that I posted on page 1 of this thread

I used to get in my car and head down towards Iowa through all the small towns and stop at every little shop, haven't found much for keepers, but always get a good laugh at the prices :D I cannot count the number of times a dealer has carried a Weeden 14 up to the counter and told me how hard they are to find.
When I first started getting into collecting big ('07-ish) I stopped at a mall in Blaine, MN I believe. There were 3 German mobiles with what I thought were high prices. Looking back they were probably fair prices, but I have never found that mall again... probably long gone by now...
@CBWho there is a very large shop in Burnsville, Antiques MN and I remember a few large ones in Rogers. If you get a chance, go to one of the antique shows at the State Fairgrounds, it's hard for me to get to them with the kids, so you might beat me to the deals ;)

There are very few antique shops in my neck of the woods, and I thought I had covered everything when I told of my two finds (Mamod log wagon, Beggs loco project) in this thread.
Charlie, I sympathize with you, and was about to whine about my relatively bad luck when I suddenly remembered these two finds from over 20 years ago:
Here's a D24, along with everything that came in the box.

And here's a D40, as found in another shop.

Haven’t been to any antique shops in nearly a year because of the virus... spotted this Weeden 20 for $60 yesterday and left it behind. Looks like someone soldered an extra pipe to the boiler to run another engine.

Bet it was tough passing that bargain up! Since antique shops usually know little of steam engine values, you find a lot of overpriced engines. But it can work to your favor as well, as I have some really valuable engines priced way too low due to this same lack of knowledge.Although not steam related, i recently bought a $300 jukebox speaker for $20 at an antique store- same one where i bought a nearly mint riveted boiler #5 for $150. It was sitting on a shelf next to a worthless engine, also priced at $150.

That's a nice thread!
I like the snapshots with steam engines sitting calmly among other antiques/junk to be spotted and liberated!
I have found only few steam engines in antique shops so far (a very small Doll overtype plus dredge, a very nice Doll 364/1, e.g.) but I was always far too nervous to take any photos of them sitting on the shelves before starting the negotiations...
Perhaps this (pretty rare) Doll 404/5 from 1937 is worth showing.
I had been trying my luck with many antique shops, "Trödelläden" (bric-a-brac shops), antique toy dealers and flea markets in Berlin that 15th November 2003 and was now roaming the area around Savignyplatz, Kantstraße, Pestalozzistraße. I was really exhausted from walking for hours (no exaggeration) and diving in and out of shops - and I had seen not a single steam item that day, not even the obligatory burnt and battered WILESCO D16, not to speak of any accessory. Not a single one, only shrugs and head shakes...!
Then I came across a small shop in Pestalozzistraße, full of custom made bicycles of the strangest designs, one of them made of wood, showing a great deal of craftsmanship. You could take a peek into the cluttered shop cum workshop - and there she stood, together with a Doll bench-saw and a Doll fret-saw on a workbench.
Actually, and I don't make this up, I turned and started to walk on, smiling about the funny bikes, because I had become so used to being disappointed that I had already gone a few paces before I realized "STEAM ENGINE!!!". Well, here she is:

Charlie, my wife and me met, as planned before, in the "Zwiebelfisch"-pub just around the corner from where I found the engine that day. When I told her that I had found something extraordinary and she saw the crate she thought it was some bottles of old wine or I had booked a table in a fancy restaurant (nothing to do with the crate) and well, yes, she was a bit disappointed when I showed her - just another steam engine.
But she managed to listen patiently (and smiling) to my story - when my telephone rang. It was the man in whose shop/workshop I had bought the engine. When I left, I had jokingly given him my number with the words "if you find the original drive bands of that engine...". Now he phoned me to say that this had somehow rang a bell and he had unearthed meanwhile a small box containing: a water reservoir for the feeder pump, a measuring cup, a desiccated piece of rubber hose for the pump, an old drive belt, a funnel and a small hook with a handle and a small piece of wick (to lighten the burner and open the fire door), all original Doll items. If I wanted to have them, I would just have to collect them...
My wife agreed to have an eye on the crate (yes, of course I ordered another glass of the bubbly stuff before I left) and I fetched the items.
Nice day. And we also found a good restaurant later...

Went to 3 older towns today, 9 antique shops total and all I spotted was a pop-pop boat. Had many shop owners tell me that steam engines are hard to find and don’t stay in their shop long. I did spot the owner of a large threshing show and talked with him for quite awhile. He said to give him a call some time as he has a few at home and he knows of an 85 year old woman about 40 miles away with a whole wall of toy steamers and he’s working on buying her entire estate.

Truly a bevy of old, and some odd, beauties there.
Did any of them follow you home?
How about the box full of old railroad switch locks?

Didn’t even notice the locks till you mentioned them.
All I came home with was a rope maker.
I also sent this one off to be delivered to a new owner.

We do become more choosey and more careful after we have been at it for a while.
Good move, Nick, bringing home the Empire pump!

I would have been very tempted to buy the cannon in the background of one of the pictures!
-
Charlie, if you have an interest in cannons, I have both quality and quantity, beyond your wildest dreams (and yes, some for sale or trade). I spotted that one too, can't tell much about it from the photo, but it looks pretty nice from what I can see.
-
That Cannon and the steam engines and boiler that are in the same area were being sold by Roger Alexon.
He has a YouTube Channel with many more cannons etc. visible during his shop tour videos. Just enter
his name in the YouTube search bar to find his videos. I was very interested in that boiler, and he also had
about 50 3C collets that would fit one of my Lathes.

Nearly 3 years later, the TE is still in the case, must be that “firm” price :D

I'm always searching through antique shops, rarely finding any deals... But I do try to take pictures of what I leave behind, and thought I'd share them here as I come across them...
Keep in mind, a lot of these will likely include "Antique Shop Prices"
Thank you Nick for showing the pictures. When I looked at them, I felt as if I were standing in front of a Christmas window of a toy shop. I always liked standing there.

I never experienced the “toy shop windows” that I see in pictures, but I sure do love peeking into antique shop windows always in hope of finding something good! :D

Here’s a newer addition to the antique shop with the 3+ year Mamod TE. I expect to see this one for a few more years as it has a $399 price tag 😂

This set came home with me. I didn’t want the engine, but the seller said they had to go together. I have the smaller versions of these tools, but don’t remember seeing the larger windmill…
