This is a great rig and I decided it is time to polish what needs polishing. I got it at the Cabin Fever Auction some years ago.
I know it is in great shape as our friend Monte consigned it to the auction but it will still get a hydro test before a steam-up.
I believe the heaters are for 220 volts but not 100% sure of this. Tonight I wired it up for a test with a meter. Each heater draws 8.2 amps and about 940-960 watts. Together they drew 16.4 amps and over 1900 watts. (This was just beyond the rated limits of my Kill-a-watt but it was up to the task) This was on 120 volts ac.
It has a nice brass hand pump a little bigger than those available from PM Research and Stuart. There is also a great little Worthington Duplex Pump made from Coles Power Models castings. The immersion heaters are beasts.
After all the polishing, my hands are beaten and sore. Nonetheless a very enjoyable clean up.
Here are some pictures.
Enjoy,
Gil

Geez that boiler is a beast (what are the dimensions, just curious ?) it polished up well & has a old world vintage quality about it. very nice.
-
Wow, that looks great polished up 8)
Looks like it would be a nice boiler to have. Hope to see it in use after the hydro-test.
-
That's an impressive thing to behold Gil.

Thanks, Bruce. The vessel is approximately 15"x 7".

Thanks, Nick. I believe I can find something to run with it.

Thanks Jim! It is a beast.

In better lighting I found just how much of a beast this thing is.
The heaters are made for 240 volts and 4,000 watts..... each!
The threads are 1 1/4 NPT.
I hope it proves usable on 120 volts.

A beast to be sure ..... but of all the folks I know, you certainly have reason to have such a large capacity boiler in house. I can picture the house lights dimming as you power that sucker up however!
-
if you are going to run them at 240v then the supply cord will need to be bigger, and your standard outlet will probably not hold up.
And please cover those terminals when running.
-
Quite right, Dave. The plug and cord you see is only for 120 volts.
We have no standard plugs like you see here with 220 to 240 volts available.
It would require using an electric clothes dryer cord and plug.
Like one of these:

For now I will test it on 120 volts to see if that will provide enough heat for demonstrations.
I tested the safety with water pressure and it lets go at 50-60 psi.
-
A great project Gil.
Glad to see it all cleaned up.

Gave it a test this evening. Set up outdoors with a 125 years old 1/8 hp A J Weed piston valve engine that is pretty well worn (steam leaks right through even when not moving)
More to come soon.

Then I hooked it up to a 1/4 hp Sipp horizontal engine.

Those both look great with that boiler, love the steam plume coming out of the Sipp 8)
I expect there will be a video ;)

Safety valve opened up
right at 60 psi and cut off quick
as soon as I turned the throttle open.

That is certainly the Bee's Knees Gil ...... and one heck of a big bee it is too!!!
-
Looks like a mighty fine rig there , looking forward to the video.
-
I have some video footage.
No time to edit yet.
Stay tuned.
-
A nice boiler the Gil
As for powering it you can always end it here as our standard power is 240 volts and our 3 phase is 480.
None of this piddly 110 for us
Cheers

Gil that boiler is a beautiful beastie.

Thanks, Daniel, Bruce, Dennis, and Kevin.
Next up is the video!

Great video Gil, really enjoyed the whole thing, but the best was the winding down at the end... what a lovely sound that Sipp makes
Liked your little rainforest in the bush too :D
-
Man, that boiler really delivers, to be able to drive an engine like those and actually gain pressure while doing so!

Yes, it is doing a great job and let's remember it is operating at about 1900 watts and that is less than a quarter of the 8,000 watts it is rated for at 240 volts.
-
There will be another video coming soon.
Today (right now) I am testing this boiler with a 1/2 HP Sipp. I believe this is a lot more engine than it would handle with a real work load but for demonstrating it works nicely. It has been running for 1 1/2 hours and still going strong.
Here are a couple pictures of the set-up.

OH BOY .... OH JOY!!!

Oh my....Mr. Beast boiler you have now met your match.

As promised......
Another video.....
This time with a 1/2 HP Sipp steam engine ca 1895.

AWESOME!!! I really need to add a Sipp to the collection
-
Excellent video Gil, I enjoyed it immensly.
I realise the vid is about the boiler and it is a great performer but the sipp engine and the duplex steam pump stole the show for my money
You have to be pleased with all those on show..

I am with you on this. A boiler looks and sounds about the same whether it is fired up or cool and sitting on a shelf. That is why I focused a lot on the the pump and the Sipp engine.
-
Most Excellent .... all the way around!
-
Excellent setup, top class with that Sipp & steam pump; can’t get any better than that.
-
Steam pump and everything, its something to behold.
-
Thank you all...!!!
and I am glad you all enjoyed it.
