Title: Smack!!!
Post by: Nick on February 22, 2021, 10:00:06 pm
Got the kids loaded up in the van today to head to their great-grandmas house, made it onto the highway and were just about up to 70 mph and SMACK!! The hood flew open smashing into the windshield. Could only see a couple inches underneath to get pulled over on the side of the road. Hood was bent into a U-shape and the glass is broke behind the rear view mirror. Looks about the size of a basketball hitting it. Hoping the cold doesn’t make it splinter further down... Never had anything like that happen before, and don’t really want to experience it again!  :D  Kids sure thought it was cool though and couldn’t stop talking about it  :D

Jeez that must have been a frightening experience for you all and reading it, it sent a shiver up my spine at what the could have happened.

Glad you're all ok.

There was a car right in front of us and one beside us when it happened. One of them had to have seen it, but nobody stopped. It sounded like an explosion when it hit the windshield. We were in a hurry, so I slammed it shut and drove home slow enough to avoid a repeat. Will have to look in the daylight to see what let loose or may have rusted away.

Hard to get a picture of the cracks, but you can see around the mirror

Hood bent back pretty decent, has a few dents in it now... will have to see if I can get it shut further tomorrow...

No fun in that at all!  :-\

Been there twice myself, and it surely is an effective wake-up call.

First time my own fault...
Was in a hurry after restoring a car completely with full repaint, and didn´t mount the safety hook before driving the car, leaving it to rely solely on a swiftly mounted and poorly adjusted latch...that cost me a new hood and a repaint of the roof.

Second time i suspect i hadn´t closed the hood correctly/completely, and the safety was all that held it. Fortunately it happened on a gravel road at relatively low speed, so nothing but a hinge was damaged.

Mama mia - you got lucky that you could stop -
i had once a crashed Windshield at a speed of
88 miles (we may go faster than Americans)
the view was blind within parts of a second
I had to open the side window to have a view
and that was the old style with a hand crank.
I remember the Ford Bronco I had - Dark midnight
and the headlights shut down - at speed on a curvy
country road - that was tricky too.

Holy cow Nick.

Glad everyone is OK. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

I would definitely have needed a clean pair of boxers if it happened to me.
