I got a touch of spring feaver this weekend and made a couple of fancy plinths to mount two of my steam plants on.
The picture was taken after dark so doesn't really do justice to the color or grain of the wood but here they are.
[attachimg=1]
The larger one is African Padauk, the smaller one is Bloodwood if I remember correctly. (I've had that piece of dark red lumber for so long I can't remember for sure)
I will be using them as bases for my Aster and Saito Marine plants. The Aster has been in the box for quite a while, the Saito set up is a recent aquisition.
[attachimg=2]
The Aster engine is no longer available but I believe it is used in the Accucraft Shay.
Heres a side by side for size comparison.

Very nice pieces and bases Bill 8)
-
Oh my goodness .......... those engines and plinths fully qualify as First Class Eye Candy!!!
-
Astonishing plants, and some very nicely finished bases.
Well done Bill!
-
Thank you guys, I still need to make a few fittings before I can get things properly hooked up.
I have a couple more bases to make first. ;)
-
Very elegant bases there Bill.
-
Thank you Jim,
I've been digging and have a couple more (or more than a couple) of engines and boilers yet to mount.
This Saito Y2DR and ancient Saito boiler would be nice on a paddle boat but one paddle boat is enough for me.
So I've got it sitting on a rather warped piece of Walnut to see how it would look, I'll be looking for a nicer piece to make the base out of.

Wow .... that's impressive!
You certainly have all the best of Saito's marine offerings in your collection.
I assume that boiler is an early version of the B-2, pre-dating the current B-2e & 2f offerings.
-
The boiler is a B2-E I don't know when it was made. the quality then was not as good as it is now.
Here is a rather blurry image of the box,

A very nice job on the plinths.
And some beautiful Saito engines and boilers. You have amassed quite a collection.
Looking forward to seeing the finished products.
-
Thanks, you will definately get to see the finished product or products, as this project is expanding more and more as I dig through my collection.
Also, If anyone has information or a link to the history of Saito steam I would be very greatful.
I have a couple more engines that I would like to know more about.
-
Let me see if I can link what I have available for Saito. Unfortunately it doesn't go far back in history, and is more likely a not too recent catalog and also a boiler operation instruction sheet. Perhaps you already have both.

[attach=2]
Hope those are of some interest.
I too would like to find info on older Saito offerings as I do have several here also. I would think that Miles (Logoman) of fair fame on the old forum would be a go to source for such material, but alas he has seemingly dropped below the horizon and been unseen for quite some time now.
-
Thank you Daniel.
-
I also have a pair of Saito V4PR engines
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
One has a drain valve on the oiler which I haven't seen on any other Saito steam engines. Quite likely it was added by a previous owner.
-
...and here i was, all stirred up by the prospect of screwing my Wilesco marine engines onto a board.
Some people certainly knows how to put things into perspective. ;)
Very impressive engines as well those V4PRs, thanks for sharing Bill!
-
Wow again ..... two V4PRs ...... that really is impressive!
Guess I'll have to repeat myself here and say once again:
"You CERTAINLY have all the BEST of Saito's Marine offerings in your collection!!!"
-
Thank you Jan and
Thank you Daniel.
I'm very guilty of buying and forgetting.
Since I don't get much shop time on weeknights I'll share a couple more photos.
Here is a picture of a MSM Clyde plant just after I had assembled it. I picked it up a few years back for a boat project which still remains unfinished.

Here are a couple more photos after I fancied it up and mounted it on a machined base that I made.

I hope you don't mind all the pictures.

-
Mind? .... I love 'em!!!
-
Fantastic!!!
-
The painted engine looks great.
-
Thank you KNO3, Charlie and Daniel.
It looks like about twenty days since my last update. :-[
I've spent the last two Saturdays building a shed for my Dad.
Once I found my M6 X .75 tap (they never seem to be where I last put them) I made a few steam fittings, basicly compression fittings with olives that fit over the 1/8" tubing, and compression nuts.

Here is the mounted Aster plant.

On to the T3DR plant next.
Cheers
-
That is truly a thing of beauty you have created there Bill !!!
-
Are you going to add a nice chimney to the Aster boiler? I think it is going to look even better.
-
Thank you Daniel :)
KNO3, I have been looking for a suitable piece of stack material, I'll find one eventually. I agree it will look much better with a stack.
-
WOW!!!
That Aster Plant looks amazing on that board there Bill :)
...as does the MSM Clyde Plant, which i somehow missed earlier, with its new dark blue "dress", wooden claddings and no less that fantastic looking metalbase.
WELL DONE !!!
-
Thank you Jan.
-
Great showing and great work, Bill...!!!

-
Bill , you do impressive work , your attention to detail is second to none ! The custom base is one of those extra special touches. well done Sir.
-
Thank you Gil.
Nick, same plant but the brass isn't quite as bright anymore as it has been sitting on a shelf for a fwe years being neglected. :)
Bruce, very kind words from someone whos work I have often admired.
Thanks guys

I've mounted the Saito T3DR as well, Here are a couple of pictures.
It still needs some pollishing and I've left off the exhaust tubing for now.

A beautiful plinth.

Fantastic Work Bill.
A family portrait would be great.

Thanks Bruce

Thanks Charlie
It might be a while before I can get the family together for a photo, but I'll see what I can do. :)
-
Here's one that I don't have to mount, unless it's in a boat. ;)

I think there should be a worldwide ban on posting pictures of Saito plants.
Not helping the fight against poverty showing such things! :D
They both look amazing, well done Bill!!!
-
Bonjour,
Beautiful plants indeed but to my opinion, they would be better in a hull ;)
The T3DR is a very good machine able to operate gently at 20 PSI :

Thank you Jan,
I agree, often times when someone posts a picture of thier collection it will test my personal fight against poverty. :)
But I justify it by telling myself that maybe I have helped the economy a little with my steam related purchases over the years?
Cheers
-
Thank you Raphael,
I love to build boats and agree that they look best in a hull, chugging across a pond, but I have found that they take up even more space to display and store than a simple plinth.
And I have definatly run out of storage/display space. :)
