Wouldn't want to mess around with him! :D
I love the detail in your pictures Jim, please keep posting them 8)

Much appreciated Nick :)

Will the Kangaroo attack people if they get to close?
How far away was the Kangaroo?
-
Love that - the same expression on his face as on my wife's when yet another EBay parcel gets opened!

Nice photo Jim!
That gent looks like he's feeling very self-assured. I'm sure if you asked him he'd be saying "No Worries Mate!!!"
-
to me he kind of has that "don't mess with me" look , he looks like he could hold his own pretty well. BTW, great picture Jim.
-
Jim, you have definitely captured "the look"... that bugger isn't going to back down from anyone!!!

That is a wonderful photograph, Jim!

Its pretty hard to get close to one in the wild, but if they are cornered they will stand up on their tail and kick with their back legs,
they can kill a large dog easily. But by and large like all herbivores flight is their first choice.

Thanks for the replies everyone, very much appreciated.

Great picture Jim !
I donīt even have a "real" camera here anymore, what did you shoot this one with?
-
Kind of reminds me of Clint Eastwood when he said "Ever notice how you come across somebody once in a while you shouldn't $%^$ with?" - you're a brave man Jim to get close enough to get a great picture like that.

Wonder how close he was in reality Larry, some serious gear out there these days (https://emoji.tapatalk-cdn.com/emoji6.png)

Hey Jim
Perhaps you should make this thread, or start another, with "Best Caption for this Photo"?
Several great responses so far !
I'll offer : "Don't even think about it!!!"

Jan the camera is a Nikon D850 and the lens I had on was a Nikon 200-500mm.

Kangaroo's aren't really dangerous, though you do need to be careful and definitely steer clear of the lone male bucks.
The kangaroos we have are Eastern greys, the females are a lot smaller than the males, the males look like they take steroids they are so muscly.
Around our home they are skittish, but they have become used to our presence. You'd never get this close to the roo's even just a couple of kilometres in the bush from us.
We have a lot of Wallabies around us as well, they are super skittish and you can't get within a 100 metres of them.
West of us (we are right on the coast) are the really big red roo's, they dwarf the eastern grey roo's by a large margin.
These photos (I've posted these before) are our at our front door (between our home and the lake) there can be dozens of roo's out on our lawn at night keeping the grass down, the growl and kick the hell out of each
other all night.

Handsome fellow but if you can get violated by a hedgehog I certainly stay away from 'Roos.
-
The toughest creature I ever see in my yard is a racoon or maybe a coyote. That beast is magnificent!
-
Thanks Paul, I've always liked seeing photos and videos of racoons, they look so incredibly nice looking animals.

How cute are there faces though!!!
If you got an orphan baby and hand raised it, do they become tame?

Not when we tried... after so long we released them
-
Do they bite Nick?
Can they defend themselves say against a domestic cat?

Full size or baby? The little ones we found were very friendly, walked right up to us.
They would shred a cat to pieces if they had too. They are very mean and strong when trapped in a foothold, but I guess I would be too... used to trap a lot of coon (sell fur) till I met my wife. Had a great-uncle who used to cook raccoon, it was good, but a bunch of scent glands had to be removed first.

Coon pie!
Kangaroo tail done right is incredible -

Getting back to kangaroos, I remember hearing a story about my great-grandpa claiming to have seen a kangaroo hopping through his pasture out in the country. Of course nobody believed his story and thought he was crazy BUT a week later there was an article in the paper that my grandma seen about some kangaroos escaping a local circus (10-15 miles away). I guess nobody will ever know if it was true or not? and if so, what the heck ever happened to it??
-
Jim, racoons are much like humans, each one is a bit different. They are strong, tough and tenacious beasts well equipped with fang and claw and often a mean temperament to go with it. Domestic cat hell .... even the wildcats steer clear of them, as they don't want to enter into a fracas where they stand that much of a chance to get hurt themselves.
I've heard plenty of stories of hand raising them from babes and making good pets, but I've never seen a good pet racoon, so I'm a bit skeptical. I've also heard plenty of tales of people trying to raise them into pets and failing .... often with doctor bills to show for it!
Don't get me wrong, I both like and admire racoons, but generally let them be as long as they aren't messing with me. Have one that pays regular nocturnal visits here, but pretty well behaves him or herself, so I've no quarrels, but if it starts tipping over the trashcan or shredding the garden, then we may have issues.

We have stories of black panthers that were brought over as mascots by US Army units in WWII and escaped. Stories of sightings come up every couple of years.

Enjoyed reading that Daniel.
What about squirrels and skunks do you see them ever?

What about squirrels and skunks do you see them ever?
Very common here Jim, half a dozen+ squirrels (red and gray) in the yard at all times. Feed them corn so they leave my bird seed alone.
Skunks are most commonly seen dead on the road and I caught a few in my trapping days. Luckily only been sprayed once and a friend was with so we both got it. :D
I snapped this on a cold winter day of a squirrel up in the walnut tree trying to keep warm

And a little red squirrel, we have an agreement with each other that they keep out of my shed and I won't trap them ;)
