Maerklin D? 4010 0-4-0
« on: November 08, 2021, 10:30:26 pm »
Good Day Members!

Perhaps someone can assist me.

I cant seem to find any more information on this.  I have since cleaned it up.

Seems a letter D? 4010 is present.  It has foward and reverse.  It has an oiler up front and its an American engine [cab and cowcatcher] that I believe is from Marklin in Germany Pre 1910.

Any insight would be appreciated.  I have it pulling some prewar lionel cars for the time being.  Its an amzaing runner just a shame the paint isnt better.  The boiler was full of goopy gluey yucky sticky tar like substance that a qtip was able to remove without effort.

Regardless I love its character and features. there is an F stamped on the bottom of one steamchest but otherwise no markings.

Many Thanks

Jason

Love steam engines, especially older German made.  Love the more clockwork style.  Addicted to this stuff!

This appears to be an R 4010. From the Schiffmann Sammerkatalog: "with eccentric - 36 (cm,) black hand painting reversal, 2 fixed double-acting cylinders act on the rear axle, drive rods, gallery rods, (1929 - 1932.)"

Great find, an early Marklin American market live steamer. Here's a page from the Marklin 1930 catalog showing the R 4010.

Congratulations on the purchase of this Märklin steam locomotive, Jason. Nice that skeptic49 was able to identify the locomotive so quickly.
A video of the locomotive running after the major overhaul would be nice.
Cheers

Many Many thanks.

I had found the 4010 much older and then some new HO Marklin electric.

Many thanks for also sharing the catalog image.

I dont really want to do much to this loco at all But Paint [heat safe] maybe a while down the road, I rather like the original look.

Its no longer sticky and I ran 3 rinses of engine degreaser [enamel safe] thru the boiler and steam chests. It turned the red liquid into milky coffee sludge.  It now flushes clear.

I have vintage 30s marx track and 30s lionel carsnthat will go perfect for a video I hope to film this afternoon and post tonight for allnto ejoy.

Cheers

Many thanks again skeptic49

Really a nice find!
I simply love the way the Märklin people "converted" their thoroughly German locos to a more American look by just adding the bull bar/ grille guard (the German term would be "Kuhfänger", cow catcher, which shows how unfamiliar this was in Germany).

I had an R 4000 once and it was a good runner as well. With the comparably big cylinders, these locos look a bit "top-heavy", but very characteristic. I would keep it in this "played with" condition, btw.

I would enjoy seeing a video of the loco in operation.
