Dual gauge circuit of track completed.
« on: October 06, 2023, 02:28:41 am »
Hi,

A few days ago the fitting of the third rail of the dual gauge circuit of track on the Cardiff Model Engineering Society's garden railway was completed and a few minutes of playing trains was required.

Take care Tony.

Looks like it all runs nice and smooth there Tony, but a long wheel-base eight or ten drivered loco will be the proof positive that everything is truly copasetic with that trackwork.

Hi Daniel,

Yes, they would, but I think we have nothing larger than a six coupled, we mostly run narrow gauge prototypes and I think that the inner gauge'0' track which has one 36" radius point might be a problem for longer wheel base locomotives.  The outer dual gauge; G45 and gauge '0' track which has radius's in excess of ten feet should be OK, but its 48" radius points might be an issue.

Take care Tony.

Yes, so long as visitors don't bring in long wheel-based locos, you'll probably be fine as you designed your layout around what you normally run. However, it is through the switch work where the problems often lie, what with close coupled reversing curves and all.

Hi Daniel,

Reverse curves can be testing but don't really present problems for our narrow gauge stock, however as almost anything that will run on gauge 0 and 1 tracks we hope are catered for, if there is an issue the main line dual gauge track has only straights and ten foot plus curves should take care of it.

Yesterday, the gauge 1 sidings were completed as far as track work is concerned, I only now have to make a gauge 0 point for the dual gauge track to connect it to the inner gauge 0 circuit.  This could be interesting as the dual gauge track uses code 250 rail, the gauge 0 track is code 200, and the dual gauge track sleepers are twice the height of the gauge 0.

Take care Tony.
