Hunting Weekend
« on: April 02, 2025, 10:10:41 pm »
Terrific weekend away at a friend property up in the high country.

Got sick of shooting feral goats.

My grandson got a nice fallow deer (all the species of deer here are feral to Australia) and a MASSIVE Murray Cod (that was released totally unharmed).

Big fish, but kind of an ugly guy :D

Can’t remember if I’ve asked you, but do you ever eat the deer there? They’re good around here since they eat a lot of corn, but up north not so much…

Huge fish ... that would have made a whole lot of Fish & Chips.

Looks like some good times and great memories, being had and being made!!!

Yes Nick, a lot of that is in a fair few freezers.
Because they are feral here they can be shot 365 days a year (and spotlighted at night on private property) and still there numbers are exploding (we have a number of species of feral deer) there's so many, that most hunters only bother taking the backstraps.

We saw literally hundreds on distant hills. Cleaned up a lot of feral wild boar, feral goats, foxes and rabbits....but didn't put a dent in their numbers.

That Murray Cod would most likely be around 40 years old, did you see the feral European Carp up on the bank? (They are all left dead and NEVER put back alive) the old Cod would be living high of the hog inhaling them for meals! He was caught on a large live Yabby.

I seen the fish on the bank but thought you were using part of it for bait :D

I wish they would allow more deer hunting around here, the numbers are way too high and far too many are hit by cars. Coyotes are another big problem around here and I used to trap them when I had time and the fur was worth it, but now they aren’t worth anything…

Crazy how there numbers increase, it was rare to see one around our area 20 years ago and most sightings were at night whilst driving. A friend totaled their small car a few months ago hitting one at night 2 kilometers from my place.
Go for a walk through the bush and there are rub marks everywhere.

These are the species of deer introduced to Oz -

Fallow deer
Red deer
Chital deer
Hog deer
Rusa deer
Sambar deer
