This Sums Up My Feelings Today..... VETERANS DAY November 11th
« on: November 11, 2024, 08:14:44 pm »
This is from the Commandant of the Marine Corps, General David H. Berger.

I express my profound appreciation to the brave Americans who have heeded the call to serve our Nation.  Our observance of Veterans Day traces back to the end of World War I, and the establishment of Armistice Day on 11 November 1918.  In 1954, American veterans pushed Congress to change "Armistice Day" to "Veterans Day" in an effort to acknowledge all veterans.  In recognition of the first Veterans Day, President Dwight D. Eisenhower declared “let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain.”
2.  Today we honor those Marines, Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen, Guardians, and Coast Guardsmen, who have served this nation in war and peace.  Let us extend our heartfelt gratitude to them for their selflessness and recognize the sacrifices they have made as members of the United States Armed Forces.
3.  This Veterans Day, let us take time to proudly remember all who have worn the uniform.  It is my distinct and solemn honor to thank you for your service.
4.  Semper Fidelis, David H. Berger, General, U.S. Marine Corps, Commandant of the Marine Corps.//

It's great that you have those photos and some memories.

I have no photos of my Dad in Navy uniform, from that era, and he absolutely never talked about it to me or my brother.

Had one Uncle on my Mom's side that saw the Elephant from beginning to end, and though I never heard any of his stories either, I did get some second-hand background, and a warning.

Five amphibious landings, North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Anzio, South of France, three Purple Hearts, and for many years after you did not ever approach him unaware, but always called out your presents at some distance. One of his brothers paid the price of not doing so, with a shovel scar.
