Methanol hand sanitizers a danger?
« on: July 24, 2020, 10:39:23 pm »
Been seeing local news reports that there is a major health recall of hand sanitizers containing methanol . Most come from Mexican manufactures.
https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-safety-and-availability/fda-updates-hand-sanitizers-methanol
Anybody try and test-burn the bad sanitizer yet ? Peraps they would burn gooey, or maybe stank, or maybe smell good  ???
I see that Swiss Fire Gel contains ethanol, Thus I wonder if it’s “safe” on hands. Ahhh ,  just minutia and trivial musings....

I think sanitisers use ethanol not methanol.
Try using sterno, it is probably safer.

Everclear or other hi-proof grain alcohols work well,
both for sanitizing (diluted, just a bit) and for steaming.
Not too expensive, and you can make a cool drink to enjoy
at the same time.  Don't mess around with products that
contain methanol.  Only to be used as a gas treatment.

Methanol is right up there with carbon-tetrachloride, for being absorbed through the skin and not healthy! I add methanol to our gas well every month and always wear rubber gloves, although i understand some people use it to operate engines as well.
