I started a resto of sorts on my Sears D10.
The boiler housing has a nice patina, so that won't be painted. However, the rest of the engine the paint starting to peel badly with rust. I tried oiling it but the peeling paint was just too much.
To remove the paint, I used a hot boiling water and soap. After scrubbing and using Alcohol to decrease, I used etching primer and painted with engine paint.
The parts are in the garage with an old heating pad in a box overnight.
Different paint stripping technique and no worries of leftover stripper lurking in a nook waiting for that final coat of paint so that it can make its appearance. Good start, cant wait to see the end result.
I started assembly.
I think I will desolder the steam line and install one made by me with brass tube. The old one was cut short 40 years ago.
When I assembled the red tray, the nuts flaked the paint. I touched it up with paint. It's the underside. I may repaint the red. While I did degrease, and I used etching primer, I wonder how well the paint is sticking since I didn't score the surface with sand paper since it wasn't rusty.
I hope the nuts didn't peel paint due to the type of paint (car engine paint). I prefer paint for car bodies as it adheres and dries well.
Another possibility is the chilly day. I wonder if the paint was fully cured. I fixed my heating pad, so I will warm the metal thru the night.
Nice that you are caring for this one. D-10's with throttle valves are rather uncommon, but Sears must have made that part of their order as mine has one too.

Is your little toaster oven a convection oven? I do the same to keep the smell out of the kitchen

After getting called back in the house, I played truck with my son (Mamod SW and my Mamod Doodlebug). It's fun loading and unloading beer & pickle barrels. We actually need more figurines. Any good 1/12 scale ones that are fully movable? (Knees, elbows)
As for the oven: It's a cheapo. It's just a heat coil type. No actual fan in it.
It has temp, style of heating (I just use bake), and a shut off timer.
I put a thermometer in it. According to the thermometer, it's not very accurate. The temp climbs and dives.
As for the engine, I put a new brass steam line in. The old played one was wiggly and cut short. I gotta have straight steam lines! =)
I tested the lines with a hand pump and to pop out the glass to put in a new seal.

As for the oven, I went with convection because I didn't know if the paint would get any hot spots... Mine is an El Cheapo too from the thrift store. Plenty of them out there as people buy them and realize they take up too much counter space
