Small OPITEC steam engine kit
« on: May 23, 2021, 12:03:26 pm »
Hello,

a few years ago I picked up a small incomplete steam engine model on ebay for less than € 20,00 incl. postage. I thought to myself, for the money it always goes. The model with oscillating cylinder from Opitec is still available for purchase as a kit. The kit offer is aimed at young people from 15 years.

https://www.opitec.de/werkpackungen/metall-und-blech/funktionsmodelle/modell-dampfmaschine.html

The model I purchased was missing the steam pipe and the exhaust pipe. Since I did not like the foundation plate, I also replaced it next to the missing parts.

After that, I was still not completely satisfied with the appearance of the model. Without the chimney and chimney extension, the little engine somehow looked like a chicken without a tail. So these parts were also supplemented by me. See the result.

Looks great Jürgen, well done!

Have had one of these kits here for many years now, but that one most likely never will be assembled, as it nicely fills a spot in my very minute "kit engine collection".
Cheers

I know Jan. There are always things I think I have to have because I'm sure I'll need them at some point. These things then end up in my "Things I still do, repair, complete....Box". Yes, maybe that will work out again sometime in this life. ;)  :D

This made me laugh! ;D

That is some nice sheet brass work there, Jürgen. What I like about this hobby is that it brings so many disciplines together: Sheet metal work, soldering, machining, painting, electroplating, woodworking, electricity, thermodynamics, etc. It's got it all!

You are right Paula. What makes it even more interesting is that with all the different disciplines, you always have to try things that no one has described yet. Or, the knowledge about certain ways and procedures that have already been described has remained hidden from us until now. Always a challenge.

Neat little engine Jürgen, wouldn’t mind having one here myself, especially at that price!  ;D

Thanks to all for the words of appreciation.

Nick, the small model is still available for purchase. Unfortunately, the transport costs from Germany to the USA will probably be higher than the purchase price. Too bad.
