Doll Electric Vertical
« on: September 02, 2019, 08:00:47 pm »
Produced by Doll and imported and assembled in the USA by Bing in the 1920s. The engine runs on 110 volts.

I do not know the Model No.

The engine is all original except the chimney and safety valve weight.

It is a double oscillator (runs in both directions), but I only ran it in one direction during the video.

The water pump accessory is made by Ertl as a static model and has been modified by fellow Forum Member Bruce aka St Paul Steam.

She runs & looks a treat Charlie,  always satisfying to see them working as well.  Nice (large) vertical 😊

Always liked these and wouldn't be surprised if I had bid against you on this one  ;)

I have this text saved from a few years back from a Mamod Forum member in NY about the Bing-Wolf Dolls. I wonder if Danny or Scott can add any more history?

Quote
As far as I can establish, Bing Werke formed a conglomerate with other toy manufacturers in the early 1920s. This included Kammer and Reinhardt and Louis Wolf and may have been the result of the German hyperinflation.

Also around this time, Bing were sued by Kthe Kruse for copying her dolls. In fact, they even advertised them as an "Imitation of the Kthe Kruse Doll". The suit went back and forth, but Kruse won in 1925, presumably at considerable cost to Bing. There's a pic of a Bing doll below (I'm thinking of suing them myself for copying my expression after I realized I hadn't won the engine). In 1928, Bing merged with Louis Wolf and become Bing-Wolf, and of course, the Wall Street crash followed in 1929 causing more trouble. Bing-Wolf were bankrupt by 1932.

A very nice little engine.

The pump runs very smoothly, too.

Charlie - I'm glad to hear that the wiring was still good and safe.

Thanks Scott. I had an electrician friend check it out after watching your video. I suspect a prior owner had cleaned it up. I forgot to attach the ground. I won’t make that mistake again.

I like this engine-big, beautiful, and smoother than cool-whip. Thanks for the video.

C'mon, Charlie! Live dangerously- it's only 110, it won't blow any digits of or anything. Just a little tickle :P

Benny:

Sounds like your nerve endings have been dulled over time.  Admittedly, I am a Wimp when it comes to Electroshock.  Probably as a result of the near lightning strike that I experienced at 9 years old fishing in my grandfather's pond in the rain with a golf umbrella.  A story for another day....
