Early Weeden #20
« on: November 26, 2024, 09:33:16 am »
I got a early #20 from my brother and it was a basket case.  Missing the lamp base, smoke stack, bayonet whistle, and the bayonet pressure valve's arm was busted off & gone.  Talk about a challenge but I got it to run!

I got reproductions / replacements for the whistle & pressure valve, which both have their issues.  Poor fit, leaking, and not true reproductions.  I borrowed a lamp base and stack from another engine.  Then I ran into problems where the arm of the piston was out of place, that took me a bit to figure out.  Then the piston rod would jam, so I can to take the end cap off (which I HATE doing) to clean crap out of the piston area.

During the video, I am pretty sure I was running low on fuel, since before I started the video it was running slight better.  Regardless, its running and likely had no right to ever be ran again ;-)

Hope you enjoy!

Coming soon, Revisit of Early Weeden No. 20 - I was able to win a some what reasonable eBay listing of a No. 20 that will get my brother's the proper brass lamp base, pressure valve and smoke stack.  The price wasn't bad, though there was someone else that wanted it too - hope it wasn't one of you guys.  At least I got it for a lot less than the buy now listing.

It is interesting that the balance wheel is grooved, not sure if I have seen any Weeden's with its balance wheel grooved.  Now if I could just find a bayonet whistle to replace the reproduction one, though that isn't critical.

Hey Frank - thanks for the time but I got one from Dave for the 1st No. 20 I fixed up.  While it is surely better than no bayonet whistle but I'll wait (a long time) for a donor to pop up.  Interestedly, just this past weekend I pointed to someone to Dave for one of his repro bayonet whistle and they ordered one!

BTW, what do you think about that grooved balance wheel - seem many of those on Weedens?
