Zinc Pest + Super Glue
« on: April 05, 2021, 09:31:23 pm »
This little Fleischmann aggregates flywheel is affected by zinc pest I have put multiple coats and 'injections' of Super Glue (Cyanoacrylate) into all the cracks and its held up for four years now and doesn't look like its gotten any worse, so the method of using Super Glue to halt Zinc Pest seems to work so far.

Well done Jim. I'll try that now, too. So far I have kept my hands off machines that were infected with zinc plague.👍

well done , case of whatever works but I am sure you keep a good eye on it and you are as aware as I am what the result will be if it shatters at high speed

HiJürgen, I have three of these Fleischmann engines. Two just aggregates and one a complete plant and the other two flywheels show zero zinc pest.

Neat that you have done it four years ago, so have actual proof that it is working. I have had four 135/2 here over the years and only one has been affected, but not in the flywheel

What a shame that beautiful 135/2

That would be a good candidate to take a few photos and then fill with super glue to hold it together.

Because those cracks are so bad, I'd be really tempted to try the super glue + baking soda trick that would fill all those cracks smoothly.

If you haven't Youtubed "Super glue + baking soda" you'll be amazed how that works!

I have done the super glue + baking soda on a few of the kids’ toys and I cannot believe how fast it works!

Yes Superglue works quite good - I use Zap-a-Gap CA+
It can stop but who knows - in 50 Years it will break again -
But this will not be your issue - haha
I have fixed some of the Maerklin Dynamo housings...

HiJürgen, I have three of these Fleischmann engines. Two just aggregates and one a complete plant and the other two flywheels show zero zinc pest.

Fleischmann brought out some very nice machines between 1949 and 1950/51. Unfortunately, in the post-war period, a lack of material meant that the mixtures of some cast alloys were not correct and that the well-known zinc plague damage occurred in later years. Too bad, but not to change. I regret this a lot.
Cheers
