Jensen Model 45 Vertical Engine
« on: January 12, 2021, 08:23:33 pm »
Hi All. I need a retired Jensen Model 45 Vertical Steam Engine for parts or restoration, or at least the oscillating steam cylinder to fit one. I'm trying to bring my 1958 childhood Jensen Model 45 Vertical to life one more time to pass to my family in working order and display. I hope some one can check the parts bin and come up with a miracle. Please help if you know of one Thanks.

Hi Bart1353
Greetings and warm welcome from St. Paul In.
The Jensen #45 piston assembly differs from the other oscillators in the way of a much longer piston connecting rod , maybe someone here can help you out with that part. I have a little experience with the rest if you need help.

Hi Bart, Is yours missing? wore out? We have some very talented people here that may be able to make a part if one cannot be found...

Hi Nick I am new at this. I have to figure out how to get a hold of you. There is a video of a model 45 running on Google under Jensen Model 45 Vertical Steam engine. The cylinder is missing on mine. It has a closed end, and the spring loaded mounting screw is missing too. Did I read correctly that one might be fabricated? Perhaps Jensen could supply me with the specifics. I got a few parts from them, bit as you can imagine, they haven't built one for a long time. Bart1353

Thanks Bruce for answering. Another responder says there may be a possibility of manufacturing one. You are right, the cylinder rod is longer than many. It also has a closed end. I am missing the spring loaded mounting screw also. I continue to search on line and in antique shops hoping I can get lucky. I do not know anyone who can make one, but another responder says he knows some talented people. I hope they get back to me. It gives me some hope. The Model 45 has been out of production for a long time. Bart 1353.

If one doesn’t turn up, I have a couple of 45’s and would be happy to help with dimensions/pictures if you can find someone to help you make one

Hi Bruce. I will look and see how to send a picture. It may be awhile as I figure out how to do it. There is a video of an operating Model 45 vertical Steam Engine available under Google when loading Jensen Model 45 Vertical Steam Engine that shows it running. Again I am short the steam cylinder, connecting rod and the spring loaded mounting screw. Perhaps someone can give me some measurements from an existing cylinder mechanism and I can have one fabricated. Do you know of anyone who can do work like this? Thanks for your interest. I would love to get this old engine running again. I got it when I was in second or third grade. My Uncle was an electrical engineer and supervised me in its operation. As with many kids, it ran erector set mechanical creations. Bart1353 What is there about restoring old things?

Hi Nick, Still learning how to work this site. I would appreciate your measurement of your Model 45 steam cylinder and rod assembly with the appropriate diameter and stroke. Then, perhaps I vcan have one fabricated. Do you know of anyone who can do this? You have been the first person I have found that even has a model 45. It gives me some hope! What is there about old steam engines that makes us want them to be in operating order? Thanks for your responses. Bart 1353

I believe I sent another post in lieu of answering here. Sorry, still learning.

Nick. I have no idea of the measurements and the location of the supply and exhaust steam ports on the cylinder, as I also do not know the diameter of the piston, the stroke of the connecting rod and anything else pertinent to the manufacture of a replacement cylinder. I would probably need all that to have one made. And the mounting screw and spring. A person who could actually manufacture a steam cylinder this size would be a master craftsman and a magician all at once. Wow, to have such capabilities and experience are beyond my imagination. I would need some numbers to pass on to a machinist if I could find one, Bart 1353

I've had a few #45's pass through the shop here, I believe the piston OD is 7/16" on these , kind of an odd size for A Jensen oscillating engine , I'll look in my parts bin, I know I have 1/2" oscillator parts.

That would be so helpful. I am working on getting a photograph. Wouldn't it be great if I can find one somewhere. Hope more folks are following our dialog. I am most grateful for you interest, help, and hope!. Bart1353
