John McDivitt's Grasshopper Beam ‐‐‐---SOLD-----
« on: April 19, 2020, 10:46:01 pm »
This is John McDivitt’s Grasshopper Beam steam engine or “Half Beam” as they are sometimes called. The castings came from a small company in Indiana or Illinois that stopped production after a short run. John built this engine in 1975. He never painted it which was unusual for him. The flywheel has a little casting defect leaving a little pitting on a couple inches of the face. It turns dead-on true with zero run out. I bought this piece from John while visiting his home in Sarver, PA in 2005. The machine work on this piece is as expected… superb!
.
It is now time for someone else to enjoy it.
.
As some of you may know, my friend John McDivitt passed away in October ’08 at the age of 89. He was a true gentleman and a patriot most steadfast in his convictions. He served in 2 wars to defend our freedom. His conversation was rich with history. He was a self-taught metalurgist and machinist. During his life he built some of the finest model steam engines ever produced. In 1972 he built a Coles Corliss and for that project he received the Golden Hammer award from Mechanix Illustrated. He built 4 of the Coles Corliss engines over 32 years. He was a true master of his craft. I have had the good fortune and have been honored to call John a friend.

Asking $SOLD (USD)  plus postage

Wood plinth is 9” long
Height is 8.5”
Flywheel is 5”
Questions and inquiries… Just ask

Cute little thing. Looks like the castings are all bronze. Is that so?

Good luck with your sale .
Not so much lack of interest.
I like it as does the wife untill i told her price and location.
Then with shipping and import duties it becomes a little bit prohibitive.

Cheers
Dennis

Gil, please rest assured that I'd be very interested as well, if I had sufficient free funds. But with my minor investments down about 25% and my paltry fixed income sure to be impacted to the down side, while whatever is left will most certainly suffer from the staggering inflation that this unprecedented relief package, and all its cumulative add ons and riders, must cause. There is simply no practical way I could consider springing for anything at this juncture .... even such treasures as you are currently offering! Heck, two months ago, I was actually speaking with my financial advisor about starting to take some disbursements, to augment my meager fixed income, thinking that I'm at an age where it would make sense to start drawing on the trifles I'd managed to put away, and thus have a bit more funds with which to play. Now, two months hence, I'm actually wondering if I should be considering going back to work, if I could even find a job, as that market is going to be plenty tough going forward from here.

I could write this same message to Mr. Tom, in regards to his "unique" Jensen 50, that I'd be delighted to make my own .... under different circumstances.

But that day may never come for me again!

It has taken 12 years to get back even to this reduced level, from the 2009 bust, where I lost some significant "hern" to the Lehman Bros, and up to this point my other dividend investments had only recovered to about 1/4 their pre-09 payout. I'm sure this will give them all the excuse to retreat back to a penny a share for the next several years at least, and I rather doubt I'll live long enough to get back, even to the reduced level I was at, before this health and economic pandemic hit!!!

Sorry for posting such a downer, but this is the reality we seem to be looking at going forward .... or so I think!

Hi guys, understood completely.

With several currencies in retreat and the decline of asset value along with inflation possibility, one must invest extra care in making all types of investment decisions.

That said, I will share this article I saved from Russell Investments. (home of the Russell 1000, 2000, and 3000 and other indexes.

Titled:

"Will all of this stimulus case runaway inflation?  Not so fast."

Enjoy!

Inflation will hit if we keep on doing business as usual; but if we repatriate our factories from China & Mexico and reduce our dependency on others, things will be different. Right now the only country that is benefiting big from the crisis is China by sending us & the world their sub-standard PPE & medical equipment. We have to be ready to spend a little more on made in USA for USA; that is the real independence in my point of view.
