Regner Reversing Engine Model 12/36 40701 Liegende, for sale
« on: January 17, 2022, 09:53:07 pm »
Here offering a German Regner horizontal reversing engine, model "12/36 40701 Liegende" (at least that is the best most complete name I have found for it!). Mostly all-brass, with steel flywheel (3.5 in diameter x 0.75 width), steel driveshaft, on an aluminum bed and double hardwood plinths. These models were sold by Ministeam for several years as fully finished and painted engines on wood bases, but were also sold by Regner as machined kits. As far as I know, Ministeam never sold the kits, but the finished engines were priced by Ministeam at $599 (or $699, I can't recall for sure). They are no longer produced or sold anywhere now, as far as I know. There was some variation in these, over the years they were made.

This example was made from the machined kit, but I don't know any further details. It is well-built, and runs on what I estimate to be anywhere from a low of maybe 8 PSI (very slowly), but better on what I estimate to be 12-14 PSI or so (?), based on my running it on both a mini airbrush compressor, and a slightly more powerful respirator compressor (I don't know the exact output of either one). The reversing gear works well, the only minor issue is that it will not engage on the far right slot (out of the seven slots). That could probably be addressed with some fine-tuning, but it runs quite nicely as it is already. Takes a little practice to switch directions on the fly, but about 80% of the time it works well.

One very nice detail on this engine is that the driveshaft is keyed (on both sides); this is important on the eccentric side, as it keeps both eccentrics firmly in place where they need to be (perhaps is overkill on the flywheel side). Slipping of the eccentrics on reversing gears can be a major problem, causing the reversing gear to cease functioning. This engine does not have any such problems, thanks to the keyed driveshaft.

Please note that the photos suffer some glare as this is a very shiny/reflective engine!

There is a lengthy account of a build of the same Regner engine (from the machined kit) on the Model Engineer Forum, starting date Mar. 6, 2015, that was posted by a steamer in Australia.

Asking $275, including priority mail shipping to all 50 states, payment via paypal friends/family option or personal check by mail. Please send me a private message if interested, Thanks!
