WGL - HGL steam plant for sale
« on: May 05, 2020, 12:50:01 am »
Good Day!

Well members, it's been a time since we had the Wilhelm/Heinrich & Groening Ludenscheid discussion. Offered here is (I believe) a Heinrich & Groening Ludenscheid small stream plant, made in the former East Germany GDR I call these smaller ones a "two column" engine, as the firebox has two vertical chrome decorations. I have also owned "four column" machines that were larger.

I was very happy to receive this engine, as, upon close inspection, there is NO evidence whatsoever that this boiler has been fired even once. There is no soot on the boiler, no scorching on the firebox floor, and the burner has never been used.

Now, the reason why this machine has never ran. The PSV pin is not correct. It is too short and the tip has no bevel to fit at the bottom of the valve to form a seat. I need a new set of 1/4" sq. tools for my watchmaker's lathe to try to cut a new pin, and now I'm out of time.

There is a noticeable difference in the quality of these engines. The base is a form of particle board, and the firebox floor scorches very easily. The steam outlet/pressure guage/PSV header could have been engineered a little better - On other engines of this brand I've owned there is no steam space or vertical steam outlet line. so the steam is very wet when the machine is starting up. Note the lack of outlet block valve. What I've done is wedge the PSV open until I get some decently dry steam out the valve.

Compare these engines to other East German makers such as VEB Gaselan. I've owned and re-conditioned where needed both models DM1 and DM2 and they are nice, solid engines.

Due to the isolation I (and everyone else in the world) have been under, I am asking $355.00CAD plus shipping at cost worldwide, and negotiations are most welcome! That way I hope to at least chat with another human being and fellow toy steam hobbyist.

Her are some numbers:
Base: 32.5cm X 24cm (12-3/4" X 9-1/2")
Height to stack top: 34cm (13-1/2")
Flywheeel dia: 7cm (2-3/4")
Weight: 1250gms (2lb 12oz)

Thanks for looking!

Dave

Well, there are still some mysteries left to solve regarding engines made by "Wilhelm Gröning, Lüdenscheid" and/or "Heinrich Gröning, Lüdenscheid" (which sometimes appear as "Henrich und Gröning, Lüdenscheid") the forerunners of WILESCO in Lüdenscheid,
BUT
"Lüdenscheid" is a small industrial town in the "Märkischer Kreis" in the north-western corner of the famous Sauerland region in North-Rhine-Westphalia. For all of you who have never heard of this part of the world before (99%, I guess), no, it is not close to Hobbit-Land, but about 45km straight south (with a touch of east) of Dortmund (soccer, black/yellow, ykwim??),
so definitely it is and has always been a part of West-Germany (or "good" Germany, in Cold War terms).
Thus,
these are not GDR/DDR/East German engines!
I have to admit, however, that I was tempted to see them as East-German products when I first encountered them all those years ago...
