Incredibly Lucky Find
« on: June 10, 2020, 03:43:54 pm »
For a number of years now I have had a pretty old water pump. It's a Smart, Turner, Hayward, made in Hamilton, Ont., Canada.

This pump is a classic, said to have come from the Jergens soap factory in Perth, Ontario, Canada. The picture doesn't do it justice, so try to imagine the size of something with a 22" flywheel! If the data plate is any indication (Model: 4 1/2 X 4 (I think that's bore and stroke)), this thing should really move water!

And you want heavy? This pump is on a custom channel steel frame, and my old TEA20 tractor refuses to lift it.

I've always meant to power it with a hit & miss or steam engine and take it to the shows, but its huge intake and outlet ports required fittings that were both hard to find and incredibly expensive.

Yesterday I went to the town dump, and lo! I spied a brand-new-with-the-labels-still-on-it length of pipe, threaded on both ends, that looked like what I needed. I brought it home and it screwed right in!

Now I can cut the pipe in half and have intake/outlet stubs that will take flexible hose (much easier to find), and I will be able to actually get this pump to pump!

Love the local dump! Great shopping centre!

Bob, You ought to be able to have plenty of fun with that pump.
With an engine to drive it and a substantial water tub to demonstrate it,
you are in the realm (weight wise) of considering a dedicated trailer for your working pump display.

I have a trailer. I just have to figure out how to get the pump onto it.🤔

A come-along might be useful if you don't have a winch.

I used one to get it onto the trailer when I first acquired it, but it was still a fight. Maybe I need a bigger tractor, with a powerful loader....

Come on, now, Nick! I have a lot of stuff, but I don't have one of those!

Perhaps you can lend me yours.

Congratulations Bob!

The Dump is a wonderful place to shop.

I hope you get it running.

And I hope we have shows to go to soon.

My dream job would be to either own a scrap yard or be a scrapper... problem is I would go broke after I kept everything  :D

You could be the sequel to the Junkyard Empire reality TV show.

There are no dumps to visit in Plano. And I have been known to cruise the alleys in my neighborhood before bulk trash day. By far, my best find was a Captain Fantastic Pinball Machine. I had no room for it. So, I gave it to a friend who had it restored.

I love the dump.

My local dump allows shopping, and it's amazing what I can find there.

And where does the Lone Ranger take his garbage?
To the dump, to the dump, to the dump, dump, dump...

I'm sure that's been done in the past.
If I had the storage space... And the money... I'd have a few more engines.
