Semi-rare Jensen 20 Big Power Plant
« on: May 02, 2019, 01:59:06 pm »
Just collected an engine at the local postoffice, that have lived on the wishlist for quite a few years now.
Scott orchestrated initial purchase and reshipping, and for that i am eternally grateful. Thank you my friend, MUCH appreciated !!!

I just ripped it out of the box, and shot these pics as is, but am certain that some simple cleaning, will bring this one back to as new condition.

Datewise itīs an early 80īs Jensen 20 as far as i can tell, and the "special" part about it, would be the blue anodized generator, combined with a #20 engine sporting a "valve stem stuffing box".

Comparison pics of the engine itself:

The rear end of the piston valve bore is plugged.

The "stuffing box" and 2 rivets/2 screws in side of steamchest.

Standard #20 engine, with no "stuffing box" (please take my word for that), 3 rivets in the steamchest, and open piston valve bore:

I don't guess I even knew of such a thing Jan, I've  seen the "0"ring on the inside of the slide valve ...but never noticed the rest before , there is alot of extra work in that one.
Nice catch & assist from Scott.
looking forward to the video.

This is all news to me. I've seen the blue anodized #15 bases before, but the valve spindle stuffing box is a new one on me.

Cool find and great Forum assist on the deal. Delighted to learn about this!!!

Nice haul Jan!
The valve stuffing box is also a new one on me, i take it was a factory special?

Thanks guys, happy as a clam here

Yes Philip, it is a factory production, but i assume these were an experimental batch(es), rather than dedicated "specials".
However, thatīs all gueswork on my behalf, and would be very happy to be educated... GIL, need you here !!!

I naturally couldnīt resist testing it on steam, now that it was out of the box, and besides being a bit "dry", it performed very nicely.

Cheers
Jan

Yea, it made it!

Great engine, that one.

Enjoy it, Jan.  It has certainly found a good home.

Good looking steam plant Jan with an interesting twist - I guess I've got to pay more attention and learn more about Jensens.

I was definitely interested in this one when it appeared on eBay, and had I known what you knew about the steam chest, it may have cost one of us quite a bit more  ;)  :D

By the way, have you removed the video?

I have one that is the same way. Has the stuffing box, 4 screws in side of steam chest and slide valve hole is plugged.  My engine has castiron base generator on it.
