except for the 10" flywheels, the prototype 1/4 Kansas City Lightning Engine was all machined from bar stock in the 1990's.
it has 2 opposing pistons in the same bore with the valves underneath and the igniter in the side.
it was scaled down from the full size 10 hp engine sitting under a Pine tree by an elderly bachelor's house.
i made many visits to visit Morris to measure and photograph. after i finished this one, I went on to make lost wax molds for all of the parts.
Morris loved to talk and it was always a full afternoon. i kept asking if i could take the big one home and get it running. His answer was "but then you won't come to visit me!"
i helped his Niece take care of him and after he died, i was able to get the full size engine from his estate.

the KC literature advertised that they sold a tractor version so a couple of years ago,
i built a 1/2 size as a tractor.  video at

Thank you for all of that Marv, very interesting. By the way have you had one of these at Little Log House in Hastings? I feel like I remember seeing it...

the large engine was there with it's Lightning Hay press baling straw.
i purchased the haypress at the estate auction and rebuilt it.
the 1/2 size was first started there as well.
