The focus for mine will my orphanage.
The most intriguing part of any engine is the spinny bits at least for me.

Having the whole thing is best but alas so much money.

The above is an exclusive video test of my drive unit set up for one of my recent projects.
I have parts on order to revive the pump and will be installing a mini-dynamo as well. (Somewhat homemade.) More on that later.

Here is the latest on a large horizontal Doll orphan.
When I first got it, it refused to go. Turned out the timing was very off.

Next is drive units from 2 Märklin verticals. One of them has a cast frame. I now know that to be 100 years old and has a special split valve connecting rod to drive a feed pump. Since the cylinder volumes are roughly 2 to 1, I arranged them as a Woolf Compound. Works very well and is economical with steam. #25 chain is very tough and rather elegant.

Good show, Chris. The Doll is running well. If you can find an old battery powered loco at The thrift store for cheap, the motors can be used to generate power- my old Bachmann g-scale unit makes around 7 volts.

Electric dynamos/generators are tough to get in the Goldilocks zone. Sometimes, they spin too easy and sometimes spins too hard.

I took this little motor and modified it, I supercharged it with rare earth magnets.

Being that it's DC power, it rather noisy but lights the LED bulb well. (Lights incandescent bulb dimly.) I will pack more magnets around it, see if I can run at lower rpm to hear less noise. The pitch is from the pick-ups I believe.
