Anybody have experience with ball governors?
« on: December 10, 2020, 02:41:13 am »
My current project is building a sawmill to be run by the 32cc inline four engine. It is of course throttle controlled. I’m turning over ideas for a governor for the engine, which I’d think will be required to maintain constant speed under varying loads powering a saw.  I think a ball governors, such as the microcosm m-30? series governor meant for steam could work. I ordered one, but the order seems to have gotten lost. My question is, how many rpms can a ball governor be turned and operate properly?  I assume some need to play with spring rates and of course, Fabbing up linkage, but the mechanism itself, which is of course the visual draw, what kind of speeds will it stand?  That’ll be essential to planning a drive for it.  Any ideas?
My fall back idea, which isn’t as elegant, would be a fan type governor on a fan installed just for that purpose.

Hey Jack,....Although I haven't noticed any "flyballs" on the SR-71 J-58 Turbojets, creatively playing around with ball weights, arc radius, spring rates & gear speed reduction combinations, I'm sure it's workable......tom.
