Some questions about a new addition
« on: March 31, 2019, 12:51:57 pm »
Well, it finally happened. After watching so many vids of scale gas engines, I have dipped my toe in the water. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

There is a good amount of info  out there but not very specific. My main questions- I've ordered fence charger battery, seems to be sufficient. Anyone have any other suggestions? Just don't want to worry about burning up points or coil.
What fuel mix? Some say camp fuel and wd40, but I haven't seen a ratio. Same with 2 cycle oil. And still some say lighter fluid. I know the full size run on almost anything, including sour gasoline.
I haven't run it yet. I have drill batteries, but all 18v. Will this damage anything? The coil is smaller than I anticipated. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Any help, guidance and sage advice is appreciated. Please send all your responses, written on a sheet of paper folded up in the glove box of a 1935 Lincoln Model K Phaeton, to my address on file. Thank you!

I don’t even own one yet but here I go: the little microcosm engines some of us have ordered have been known to roach the ignitions easily. So I would venture a good idea may be the lowest voltage that works. But yours is obviously a different beast, very nice!

Thanks, Tim. I found that these batteries were recommended for some engines

I have that engine. I doubt it will run on 6v. I use a 10ah 12v  scooter battery for most of my engines and run them all on Napthe (coleman fuel) with wd40 4 oz to 1 gal of fuel and do not use the drip oiler. This was recommended to me my an old timer when i first started collecting ic engines and i have never had a problem. You can still use a drip oiler as well- i just forget to turn them off when done running and end up flooding the cylinder with oil.
These engines will run very very slow when adjusted right. I have run mine all day at shows and never put water in the hopper, as these scale engines mostly don't get that hot if they are set up properly.
hope that helps.

Perfect, just the answer I was hoping for. I have a 12v 4aH a spare on my shelves, and was hoping that wouldn't be too much. That helps more than you can imagine,  because now I feel happy with firing it up tomorrow. Thanks a ton.
I will try to shoot some video to post up.

These love running on 12 volts.

I have one and only use 12 volts.
Alarm back-up and computer back up 12 volt batteries are just right for this.
If you have any trouble with that coil, Debolt has a low tension coil they offer and it is like the one they used on the factory built Vaughn models.
What is the serial number on yours. The factory builds had a serial number in the 1,000's range. The mechanics kits (machined kits) all had numbers in the 2000's and the raw casting kits all had numbers in the 3,000's. I believe there are no more than 200 and perhaps just 160 to 180 of these (all three options included).

They will also usually run on a pair of 9 volt transistor radio batteries wired in parallel.

Once you get it warmed up you can adjust it to run real slow.

Congrats..!!!

Hi Benny, The 3094 number makes it the 94th casting kit sold by Debolt.

here is what i use for a coil -they work great and are cheap-but they don't look as cool as the debolt ones. It is just a old time flourescent light ballast.

Well, I think the cool may be failing. I've run a few times, and it seem when it gets hot, it drops out. I didnt put a meter on it last night, it was already getting late, but when it shut off and didnt want to start, the coil was very hot.
More inspections to come tonight, if I feel up to it.

I would replace that coil. A larger one won't get too hot.
Also make sure it doesn't stop with the igniter points closed. That will overheat any coil.
