Covid-19 Engine
« on: May 10, 2020, 06:38:34 pm »
Although I've been able to go to work for the past six weeks, my wife and I have gone nowhere else, leaving me plenty of free time during the evenings and weekends.  I started this water-cooled vertical Domestic hit and miss engine six weeks ago, when the order to self-quarantine first came out.  My hope was to have it finished by mid-June for the Coolspring Engine Show, which has now been cancelled.  I finished the mixer today, so all that is left is lapping the valves, making gaskets, and then the base, water tank, and ignition system.  I should be on track for having it completed by the end of this month.

Depending on how many other engine shows are cancelled over the summer, I may find time to build several other engines during that time, something I usually only do during the winter months.  My next project will be a large twin-cylinder Tiny Power steam engine.  I bought the casting kit several years ago on Ebay because I knew it was no longer in production, and never got around to building it.  This just might be the time that it gets built!

Hi Doug,

COVID-19 is good for some things then :D

That is an unusual engine, nice to see something different from the many Redwing and Economy builds.

Kind regards

Thanks,
I do not have a machining background, but my skills are slowly improving. These castings are from Bob Herder, and a relatively easy engine to build, but very time consuming with a lot of small parts. I really like vertical engines and would love to find a Perkins vertical to build, but doubt there are any unfinished kis left.

Hi Doug,

I have machining background either so all a learning curve for me too, as is the model engine thing.

Never heard of Bob Herder, thanks for the tip, i'm looking for a new project and i see a few interesting things there, doubt they would ship half a ton of iron all the way to the UK though  ;D

Your engine looks really good, can you post a video when you have her running please?

Kind regards
Ade

Until I get this running, here is a video of the 1st one i built last year. I didn't intend to build 2, but a friend really wanted to buy it, so i still needed one for myself!

That is so nice, thanks Doug

You'll be able to build these in your sleep soon  ;D

I sent and email to Bob Herder asking about shipping, will wait and see.

Really nice Doug, you have it running superbly, I like the extensive use of Brass.
