May i have some advice please?
« on: April 13, 2020, 07:24:49 am »
The little M90 from Jin was my first model engine, i have had so much pleasure from this little thing and now have an itch to try constructing my first petrol engine.

I have a reasonable size lathe, solid old pillar drill and many years mechanical and RC model building experience but no milling machine.

My thoughts are to try a 'Karl' from Bengs Modellbau as these are available with all milled parts supplied?  May i ask members here if they think this is a good direction and for any other suggestions please?

Kind regards
Ade

I think it’s a great way to go if you don’t have a Mill.

I'm not a machinist at all but I think there are some kits that are totally made only using a lathe.

It looks like you have to be able to drill holes and tap them. Some Lathe work but all the milling is done.
Drilling and tapping is fairly simple as long as you don’t force anything. If you force it you will break the tap possibly inside the part which can really make things tough to remove it. I typically turn no more than a quarter turn at a time when cutting threads then back up a half turn to clear the chips. Use plenty of cutting fluid or oil.

Thanks for the advice Fullrace,

i have ordered the 'Karl' engine.  Hopefully i can take some pictures along the way as a build thread, broken taps and all :-)

I spent ages making a stainless cam follower for the M90 engine only to break a 3mm tap in the hole i was making for the pushrod, so this topic is at the front of my mind at the moment.

Kind regards
Ade

I'm glad to see your going to build your own engine. I have only the simplest tools an I have built a few very simple
engines and a couple of simple locomotives. I wish you the best of luck with your project and hope that you will
share your progress with us with a build thread.
