Tiny Power "W" Marine Engine
« on: November 01, 2023, 07:56:26 am »
After owning this kit for years, I have started working on it.  I picked it up at an auction at least 12 years ago.  This is a Tiny Power "W" Marine engine.  It is quite large, a real working motor, not just a model.  It is designed to turn a 14" - 15" propeller on an 18' boat and will produce 3Hp at 100PSI.  I still have a long way to go.

The first picture is of the crankshaft throws.  This is on my 1940's mill.  I added DRO for X, Y and Z.  Works well, but is not really big enough for this kit, especially the cylinder blocks.

The second picture is machining the rough cylinder castings at my brothers on his Bridgeport.

The third picture is boring the cylinders on his Bridgeport.

The final picture is the completed crankshaft, base and connecting rods.

I am working on the lower cylinder heads that attach the cylinders to the vertical risers with the cross slide.  I will post more pictures as I make progress.

A mighty fine start on it Gene, you certainly have the shop/equipment for the job.

You may have a long way yet to go ..... but you have already come a long way with some really fine-looking work done that is now behind you!

Thought I would update this thread since it was close to a year ago I posted the photos.  The motor is pretty much done.  I like the way it turned out.  I took quite a few liberties with the layout, especially the reversing mechanism and the steam inlet/manifold.  It runs OK, but is still very tight.  Takes to much pressure.  It also has a bit of a "clunk" as it turns that I cannot pin down.

A wonderful project and result.

The only thing left is for you to post a video of it running.  :)

I tried several things to track down and eliminate the thunk in my motor.  It is better.  I went ahead and uploaded a video to YouTube which is here:

Overall petty pleased with the result.  It really is my first attempt at a large engine.

Bonjour Gene,
Absolutely amazing job ! What a great smooth sound.
Just one concern, a little bit too large for my model boats ;D it definetely deserves a launch !
