Bing Werke 70/120 - Clone of Weeden No. 14
« on: September 23, 2025, 01:40:02 pm »
So about a week or so I picked up a Bing Werke 70/120, which I believe is a earlier run with its logo on the piston's end cap (has Bavaria and not Germany).  I have read that the engine was made (first?) for Montgomery Wards but I have seen one with a box for Sears and Roebuck as Cat. No. 79D5307 1-4.

This engine was only for the US or was it also sold in Germany?  While I haven't seen a lot of them online, is it rare or just rare than a Weeden No. 14?

Two things about my engine.
  • The pressure valve has a lead popper with two steel legs coming off the bottom.  The spring is kept on with a small washer and then the bottom of the legs are bent out.  I am unsure if this actually came from the factory this way.  There is at least one I have seen that appears to have a lead popper but no idea what is under it.  Anyone seen another example like this?
  • The connecting rod to the balance wheel is kept on with a thumb screw but nearly all I have seen this is a collared screw (as is my donor I got from my brother).  I am unsure if it came from the factory this way, if not some previous owner did a really great job putting this on. Anyone seen another example like this?
  • Another difference I see, most of these have a brass coupler that is in the piston block, then the steam pipe is in that.  Mine, the brass steam pipe goes directly into the the piston block.

I think the engine looks and runs great, so the above really doesn't matter but I like to know things!  I also think I got a pretty good deal on the engine, $150 ($169.24 shipped).  It was listed a $200 and the seller accepted my offer.  I also believe I have the original box, funnel & pale.
