Christmas Present

My Christmas present is this Empire No. 43 engine that has a hand pump to feed the boiler while running. Thanks to my wife.

Not yet. First I have to remove the scale in the boiler and glass with Lime Away.

That pump seems a rare feature that i will have to keep an eye out for in the future. Very nice find.

Merry Christmas.

  Congratulations.  If it came from EBAY I and others
were watching and bidding.  Not inexpensive and you have
an appreciative wife.  How did she know this would make
you happy?  Hmmmmm.

  I have one in which the pump will not go up or down.
The check valve ball-bearing/spring inside is ok but
but I cannot completely disassemble it.

  Please, take video of the pump in action after you get
the engine ready to steam up.  I have hopes mine can be
made to operate.

I had been talking about it, as this engine is the only one I need to complete my collection of Empire. I did show it to her. Yes, she is a wonderful wife.

There has to be two check balls. I assume that they are limed up from what I see in the glass. I will make a video of it operating and if I have to take it apart, I will photograph the parts.

Brad...wonderful wife.

  I had my engine for several years before I saw
another thread where the owner had detached the
pump (I forget the reason).  Seeing how simple
the attachment was, I tried detaching mine and
it came off very easily.  At that point one ball
bearing and a spring fell out and that is as far
as I could go.  Put it back on so I could run the
engine but now has a bit of a leak.  The pump
still does not go up or down.

  I'd appreciate a quick sketch of what the inside
of the pump should look like and how it works.  If
anyone could supply that I could maybe make mine
work.

I thought that about my empire collection (being complete), but then i realized they made lanterns, toy stoves, and many other items that any serious empire collector would have to own :)

The pump was easy to dis-assemble. On the boiler end there is a cup and spring to seal against a seat. There is a check ball in the lower intake end. Everything is limed up, like I thought. That is probably why they quit making the pump version. People using tap and well water and the pump doesn't work.
